The fox was given a start of 40 minutes.' and ran about 24 miles. Mr. Chisholrr. von the brush, and the honors were given to Miss Winifred Folsom. A lecture on "Smallpox; Its Nature and Prevention" will be delivered Mon day next at 4 p. m. in the old library building on Church street. It is hoped there will be a large attendance. The lecture will be entirely free, and the public are cordially invited to attend. The lecture, it is expected, will be very entertaining and instructive. The Epworth League of North Ashe ville Methodist church held a social meeting last evening, the members be ing the guests of Miss Bessie Johnson rX her home on Uberty street. The program included piano solos by Misses Daisy Ownbey, Eva Brown, Ethel Wil son and Bessie Johnson: guitar solo, Mrs. C. P. White; violin solo. Miss Ethel Ray; and a vocal solo by Rev. E. K. McLarty. The evening was spent delightfully. The practice of expectorating on the floor of the opera house should receive the attention of the Public Health as sociation. This nuisance is Increasing rapidly, and the efforts of the man agement to check it are unavailing. Its prevalence shows that there are a great many people who lack the pri mary instincts of gentility. "Don't ex-pec-to-rate on the playhouse floor if you expect to rate as a gentleman." It la a great deal worse than making bad puns. The monthly meeting of the Indies' Missionary society of the First Presby terian church was held yesterday af ternoon at the residence of Mrs. H. T Collins. 303 French Broad avenue. Pa pers were read by Mrs. R. F. Campbell and Mrs. W. G. Smith on the subject of the beginning of mission work In the Congo Free State. The society also listened to an address by Mrs. Parks of Boston on the Indian missions. Re freshments . were served, and a very pleasant afternoon was spent. A school director from one of the western states visited Bailey street school recently and expressed his ap preciation of the manner in which the school was conducted in very compli mentary terms. The neatness and ar tistic decoration of each room was no ted and after listening to the reading and' music in the principal's room, he spoke of the close attention, intelligent reading and delightful singing of the pupils: the style of position, pronuncia tion and graceful deliberation of thos? who read being especially praised.
