TUB tNKIA'KNCK OF CLIMATE ON AMERICAN ART "The character and climate of a country, the particular quality nf Its air and light, play no email part in tho destinies of Its people hence the natural Interest In landscape painting. Bernard Shaw attributes the slnglncss of the English and the brilliancy of the Irlah to their re spective climates, which Is more than a whimsical thruit at the Impene trable Lotion fogs," says J. Nllaen Laurvlk In WoniRn's Home Compan ion for May. "An eminent modern hlntorlan has recently made out an Interesting; cnae against the intense nerve-racking light of Greece as a prime cause of the early decadence of this race, and 1 have long con tended tha.t the dominant trats of American character Its delicate, high-strung, nervous energy and alert restlessness are directly traceable to the Intense, penetrating brilliancy of the light here, which has a greater actinic quality than that of any other country In the world, save Greece perhaps and certain other points on the Mediterranean. The ultra-violet ray, always dominant, predominates hero to an unusual degree. It may be said to bo the color of America, which is gradually being revealed to us by our present-day progressive landscape painters. who are Inter preting tho color nnd character of our country with Increasing truthful ness."
