Light refreshment will be served, and a basketball game to which no admission will be charged will be played between th team which won the Bnuthern championship for this city several years ago and an all-star team composed of collegians who have worn th uniform of various colleges and universities. The members of the Ashevllle fire department and city council spent a most enjoyable evening last night, as the guests of Plrank Loughran, In the dining room of the Hwannanoa-Ber-keley hotel. The electric outline on the front of the building wan used for the first time since the hotel was remodeled and the city officials and the Ashevllle (ire fighters were royally entertained at a sumptuous banquet. For the past several years, Mr. Loughran ha entertained these bod ies In till way, as well as the mem bers of the police department, who he has invited to dine at the Swan nan oa-Berkeley today. The 'banquets are usually given between Christmas day and tho first of January and are always looked forward to with a great deal of pleasure by the members of the three bodies. At last night' spread, U. Y. Jean nert, secretary of the tire depart ment, acted as toast master and per formed the obligations of that role in a most satisfactory manner. The members of the board of aldermen who were present followed Mayor Rankin In responding to toasts and several of the "laddies" were called upon for remarks. The banquet closed with the speech of Mr. l-ou?hran who assured those present that he was delighted to have them aa his guests and appreciated th work they are doing, lie reviewed th progress which has been made In this city since he came to Ashevllle, stating that he had seen the town grow from a village of 2,500 people to Its present sis and had seen the equipment ot the fire department changed from a hoee wagon with two wheel drawn by men, to auto-trucks. He expressed th opinion that the placing of auto-propelled apparatus In the fire department means a great thing to tha department and will un doubtedly be a great improvement. The members of the city council and th Are department, who were called upon for speeches, expressed their appreciation of Mr. Loughran'a hospitality and thanked him for tha annual banquet, which they declared wo enjoyed immensely.
