The North Carolina Good Roads association is making a special effort this year for a state-wide system of hard surface .roads. - Officials of this organization state that with the ex 1 traordlnary improvement in ' trans portation through motor vehicle and the special improvement in the trucks for handling freight, which is so rap Idly displacing the horse, that a per ' manent road for the main arteries of transportation to absolutely es sential to the business interests of ev ery, county in the state. As a matter pf fact, the improvement in the trucks and the handling of heavy loads over foads has advanced far ahead of the building- f roads sufficient for this new , means of transportation, it Is stated. ( The volume of business of fered the railroads for .handling Is far beyond -what the railroads can handle so that the Improved highway , Is now absolutely necessary if the volume- of business being done' by the c Vsiwi ( the rural district and the 4. Jislnega interests of the cities is to Continue. - --:: J.' J. Nichols, chairman of the high ways, division of the board of trade' urges every business man In Asheville to carry a membership in the North Carolina Good Roads association. The highways division at a meeting some time ago decided that the state or ganisation should have the support ef every autombile owner, good roads en- thuslast and - business man of Bun ' combe county. - Mr. Nichols stated last night that every one of the 2,278 ! automobile owners in Buncombe county should be a member of the North Carolina Good Roads associa tion. It is expected that the Good Roads association will meet In Ashe ville in 1920 and it is hoped that Buncombe county will show the big ' gest membership to the association o( any county in .the .state. , - important' problems affecting" the dairy industry in America will be dia cussed by the National Dairy asso ciation, meeting in annual convention today in Chicago. does 'wonders Resmol fir chafed .. orirritated&ns "My doctor told me about it and if I Couldn't get another jar I wouldn't ' . gfve this one up for anything." .y That Is how many people, regard Resinoi Ointment It is specially recottfmended for eczema and, other itchingVldn troubies,.but it is also ex celleht a a general household remedy lor burns, scalds, chafing, cold sores, " pimple, boils, Insect bites, etc. v Kntaol Sorp and Rahul Shnfaf Stkk coiHiia the Rahwl prapcttiu ud e 1MB ' .steels k without tfatM product. " The 2,164 sheep in Buncombe coun ty are worth S10.38S, arid 1,649 dogs are estimated to be worth $11,207, ac cording to official statistics. . In other words the dog raising industry in volves a greater amount of money than does the highly necessary pro duction of wool, at least such is ap parently the fact in this couaty. Whether legislators of the last gen eral assembly had such facts Before them is not known, but If they did not the- North Carolina legislators were familiar with conditions at any rate, when a special tax on dogs was levied. V In 1918 when dogs were only listed as personal property and not for a special tax, S5 were listed in the county. In the same year there were 1,680 sheep listed with a value of $5, 230. By comparing the figures on sheep It Is ascertained that a larger number were raised in 19 It than dur ing the previous year and that the value considerably Increased. , Under the new act of the general assembly owners must pay a tax of either one or two dollars, according to the age and specie, on every dog kept, -and the revenue derived from this taxation will be applied to the school fund of the county In which the tax Is collected. Persons falling to make the proper list of dogs will be uhject to conviction of a misdemeanor and to a fine not exceeding t&0 or Imprisoned not "exceeding 30 days. Recently considerable interest h been aroused among stock - men In raising sheep and it is expected .that the number raised next year will ex ceed the number in the county this year. It is understood the profits from the wool each year -pay for the raising ol a sheep and that there fore a sheep is an annual dividend paying proposition.
