Norburn, at their home near the city has received a special honor In the navy and has been choeen, with one other, by the government, out of a claae or post graduate students, for specialization in surgery at tne Mayo cunio in Rochester, Minn. This comes as a signal nonor to this young man as the clasa from which he was chosen for this recog nition constituted a group of picked men of the Navy. Dr. Norburn's war I record was an excellent one and his steady progress and promotion since I entering this branch of service show unusual qualities or steadfastness oi purpose and ability. Dr. Norburn was ordered to the Naval Medical School In Washington from San Fran cisco, where he was filling the po sition of operating surgeon on the U. 8. Hospital Ship "Comfort," where He was among the first Ashevllle men to respond to the call of his country and volunteered at the outbreak of the war, having been graduated from the University of Virginia and at once went into active service. .Dr. Norburn left yesterday for Washington and from there will go Immediately to the Mayo clinic to as sume his new duties. I i fl When the alumni and students of the University of North Carolina gather tonight In the main dining room of the Battery Park hotel the largest college banquet ever held in Ashevllle will take place. It Is believed. War compelled the university men to break their custom of meeting around the banquet board at every Christmas season, but a greater number than ever will be present tonight, for the affair will nerve as a timely re-union. Haywood Parker, toastmaster, will first call upon Judge P. C. Cocke, who will speak on "The Relation of the University to the State." Thomas C. Wolfe, '20, will respond to Judge Cocke. R. R. Williams will give a brief talk on "The University's Part in the War." A snappy address by James S. Howell, '20, will follow. Charles a. Tennant, '18, will speak from the viewpoint of a young alumnus. The feature of the evening will be a closing speech by Samuel Cathey, '23, one of the three blind students at Carolina. An accidental blast took young Cathey's eyesight away, but could not deprive him of the ambi tion and "pep" that Is needed to get a college education, last September he did not hesitate to place himself among those less handicapped, and has sines found that books with raised letters contain as much knowledge as any other kind. HOLIDAY PROGRAM AT LIBERTY CHURCH People of Hominy Section Enjoy Christmas Tree and Program. On Christmas day at 1:30 o'clock a large number of people of the Hominy section enjoyed a Christmas tree and the exercises at the Liberty church. Children from the Hominy school rendered an excellent program of songs and recitations, and a play "Christmas at the Cross Roads," in which twenty of the school students and Miss Kstelle Justus, teacher, participated, was the feature of the ororram.
