FfICT COTTON MAHKET More Favorable View European Conditions Created. of; Is NKW YORK. Jan. 17. Reports from Purls that the supreme council bad de cided to permit trading In certain com modities with Kusslu, evidently created a more favorable view of European condi tions In tlte cotton market today. Many traders who had sold on the nervousness of yesterday, showed a disposition to cover for over the week-end, while there was a moderate trade demand and a substantial rally in prices. March con tracts, for Instance, sokl up to 3G.49 or 44 points net higher and closed at 36.35, with the general list closing steady at a not advance of 12 to 45 points. The mar ket opened steady at an advance of 15 points to a decline of 11 points with Oc tober relatively easy under selling be lieved to be for southwestern account. The better tone of the stock market en couraged the more cheerful Idea of con ditions abroad, however, and cotton soon turned firmer. The advance met realiz ing and some scattered southern selling which held tho market in check around 84,68 for May and led to moderate reac tions during tho middle of the morning. Such selling seemed to be quite reaiTby absorbed on a comparatively small set back, however, and the market reached the best point of the day later with May selling at 34.75 and July at 33.18 and with present crop conditions showing net ad vances of 35 to 48 K)lnts. October was relatively quiet selling only 20 points or so above last night's closing figures, und the close was a shade oft from the best under realising. The cotton market reacted strongly today from the decline of yesterday and went to moder ate, advances on the strength of covering ot snort contracts ana considerable new buying for long account, the demand be ing stimulated by the calmer tone of dis patches regarding European politics, for the most part, although, reports of large transactions on the spot had their effect. For a short time on the first call the market was depressed and the trading months lost 1 to 10 points but almost Im mediately there was an upward move ment and the Improvement amounted late in the session to 23 to Al points. The close was at net gains oi"23 to 38 points Early reports were that from 3.000 to 5.000 bales of spots had been sold after hour,! yesterday, with Japanese interests the chief buyers, and although these sales did not appear in the official returns they had their effect on values neverthe less. The usual reports of active and higher cotton goods markets helped to give the market a steady tone. At times the supply of contracts -was very scanty.
