OUR MAN ABOUT TOWN!
WHAT HX IXX8 ARD HEARS DURING
THE WEEK
Oar Mai finds the town as usual,
after court-week ended, quiet and,
by comparrisoo, very dull.
He goes to the market, Monday
morning, to find it the same old
shameful building it ever was. It
is a standing reflection upon the
judgment of this public that its exis
tence is tolerated even for a day.
It is not only unsightly, and unsuit
ably located obstructing the view of
Main street from the water but, it is
a cause leading to much of the ex
tortion endured by the people
purchasers of fresh meat,poultry &c.
If the market laws wefe repealed and
the market place distroyed, then com
petition, the life all trade and every
business, would become general,
green groceries could be found in
every part of the town enabling ladies
house-keepers to do their own
marketing. What lady in tidentnn
does her own marketing ' now? Can
you find one ? No, and why not ?
Because, hardly any lady would be
caught in the dirty filthy den called
the market filled, as it is. with rabble,
rottenness and repellency. If decent
places were allowed up town or. in
any part of the business section
thereof; if merchants, grocers, were
allowed, without existing. restrictions,
to sell green meats, poultry, eggs, Ac
anywhere and at any time then, our
lady friends, house-keepers, who
would prefer making their own pur
chases, would be .found relieving the
men of the duty of marketing and
men would find their tables, at home,
better supplied and at less cost than
they are now or. will ever be under
existing custom and management.
When a lady turns her attention to
trade and purchase she can beat a
man, matters not his noasted exper
ience and superior judgment . When
ebe buys, she has an eye to the very
smallest possible figures and when
she sells, the larges amount is the
price charged. They make safe
traders and, in business, rarely ever
fail.
The wharf, this week, is not so
crowded, as last, with vessels. One
verv large schooner watt found at
Capt. Wool's dock loaded with coal
for the captain.
The sight of a large vessel in our
Bay reminds as of the olden time
when Edenton was at her best when,
notwithstanding oar present railroad
system and bur boasted high protect
ive bulwarks, her trade was superior
and her wealth surpassing anything
that has ever been experienced or
expected by the merchants . and
tradesmen of modern" times. In
those days of water transportation
and tariff for revenue only, our salt,
sugar, ruoa. molasses &c, &c , came
direct fiem the islands cf the West
Indians and was sold at prices which
now appear scarcely credible. j In those
days two very large ship yards Were
carried on in our town employing a
large number of hands, now, the sound
of a mallet or the ring of the- calking
iron is never heard. The ways have
been torn up, the houses removed and
Che places or sites of these yards, w here
onoe all was activity and industrial en
terprise, have become the home, of the
toad, the amphitheatre of the operatic
tmUfrof or the safe asylum of the cold
and snaky lizard. It is sad to witness
the ruins of ' these olden sources of
private opulence and public benefit
especially as we believe and know that
with their going has passed away other
ources of our independence an4 advan
tage. They , are gone, however, and
will never return unless protection
drives capital South for investment or,
free trade restores the South to her
wanted privileges and immunities.

A Visit to The Edenton FAIR This Year will Never be Regretted.
Let Everybody Turn Out DAILY.
Every Day a Banner Day.
The programme for the coming
fair wili be unusually elaborate aud
interesting. Each day we aim to pro.
duce multiplied attractions fresh,
bright, dazzling, and engage as
many elevating and instructive
exhibitions, games and amuse
ments, as can be secured, and all
of the rare and striking novelties
that the genius of the times has
been able to invite to enliven and
enrich these occasions, and have
power to educate, amuse and en
lighten the people, so far as they
are available and consistent with
the character of the fair, will be
exhibited, thus assuring an unusually
attractive aud elaborate programme
of everything that can lend a charm
of fascination to the great fair,
or that will appear conspicuously
grand, attractive, instructive and
amusing. The ambitious aim of
the managers is to strive to make
every day a banner day with special
ceremonies and attractions peculiar
to itself, and on the whole to make
the fair the most noteworthy and
successful of the many brilliant ex
hibitions that any society has held
heretofore To this end no merit
orious feature, act or specialty found
elsewhere, will be spared an at
tempted engagement or duplication
and our patrons may regard, without
apprehension, that our fair will be
superior and unsurpassed in every
respect
