MUHE kBOUT HAYWOOD3 THE DIRTY ASSININE EDITOR OF THE NORFOLK SOUTHERN PROGRESS. SOME THINGS THE PRESS SAYS ABOUT HIS MALICIOUS ATTACK UPON EDEN TON, AND NORTH CAROLINA. We think Edeuton has the -'drop" on Haywood, and hia ''Progress" as the case now stands, and we commend to him Polonius' golden counsel in con troversy: beware the entrance to a quarrel." E. City Economist-Falcon. The Norfolk (Va.) Chat, in an ac knowledgement f the receipt of Sou thern Progress, Frank A. Haywood's sheet, says: "The ill-concealed and ill advised animosity of it publisher asaiust the State of North Carolina on i.ecount of the acts of one or two of it citizeMs is execrable. The Fisherman Sr Farmer is right in denouncing Frank A. Haywood, of the Southern Progress. Whatever of mer it there may be in his controversy with tVe town council, about the ad vertisement and the payment of the same, it furnished no excuse for his wholesale onslaught upon the people of Edeutou and North Carolina. Edenton ami N-ri!i Caiolina, can well afford to ( jspense with Frank A. Haywood, his R al Estate Exchange, his Southern In formation Bureau and his Southern xcuraiuu parties. The fewer visits yo 1 have from, and the less you have to do with such characters the better. Among the many disparaging remarks he makes of North Carolina, and North Carolinians, he says (A Carolinian don't know how to run a hotel). No not when it takes lyiug and fraud to run it. But tfce gentleman who had charge of Nags' Head Hotel last sum mer is a (Carolinian, and if he don't know how to run a hotel he knows how to be a gentleman, and speaks the truth and not to slander, and lives better every day than Frank A. Haywood does on Sunday. Perquimans Record. Hallo! Hey wood, hav'nt you 'bit off more than jou can chawV"-to use a homely western phrase. Southern Progress the new Norfolk journalistic enterprise, of which you are engineer, in a late issue devotes much 8r.ace to this section to Nor h Carolina, for which thanks, but it empties the abund ant via's of its wrath upon the devoted heads of Edenton, the fairest gem in our coronet which we are sorry to say is as ungenerous as it is un'air. We guppose the nature of the business con tioversy between the official represen tatives of the town of Benton ana Tourseh.from the numerous references in your paper to the subject, is simply a disputed ad vertising bill, which you claim is a juit bill and they , eny n be cause ot your non-compliance with your contract. Can you not divest yourself of passion and see how uniust this is to vour legal counsel, to the ptple of Edenton, to the State of North Carolina, to yourself and to your cause in court? Could not the City Fathers of Edenton with equal justice follow your bad example by pronounc ing you an adventurer, a swindler, a shrewd New England Yankee, who was seeking to make money out of our peo ple and make no adequate campen ;a tion? And can you not see the advant age that Edenton would have over you in thiaenterchange of sulphurous com pliments? And do you see the injustice you do your legal representatives in leaving them to struggle with the mat ter in controversy and against a public sentiment of your own creating? Ah! Mr. Editor, perhaps you have never krown that pansion and wisdom are not co-tenants of the same brain. Eden ton has the prestige of a hundred years Of honor and distinction.
