The storm Monday did great dam &gc in the South, destroying millions of dollars worth of property and kill ing a large number of persons. The damage done at Charleston and Savannah aggregates lnrgeauma and from both cities comes the dis tressing news of the killing tnd wounding of a number f people. The north end of Savannah is report ed as being completely demolished, and. lnlaet, it is difficult to estimate J the damage done to property and the number ot lives lost; already orer forty bodies have been, taken from the rams. There is not fifty yards space in the streets that do not contain debris, such as roofs of houses, signs, awnings, telegraph poles, etc., which were scattered in all directions. All along the coast a large num ber of wrecks is reported. At Port Royal and Beaulort, Ga., every house was damaged to some extent, and a number of barges and crafts were wrecked and blown ashore. The Coosa w Mining Com pany loses $50,000. The total losses are estimated in the neighborhood of half a million dollars. Fully one hundred persons were killed and drowned, only six of them white, the others being negroes. Twenty lives were lost on Paris Island by drown ing, and tully 25 lost at St. Helena. Augusta suffered no loss beyond the breaking of the telegraph, tele phone and electric light wires from falling trses, but the damage to crops cannot be computed and estimated upon ior some days.
