Quite a number of yestfg age when crops in this country hac been bad and when business in general had been dull, when the people of the country were des pairing of providing for their families,a conference pf ministers was held, at which was dis cussed the advisability of declar ing a Day of Fasting and Prayer, to atone for the sins of the peo ple that had brought on the miserable state of affairs. Speeches were made by many of the ministers present ild all seemed to be of one mind, that the country must recognize aud set apart a Day of Fasting audi Prayer, But there was present an old geutleinan, a minister of the gospel, and after i?.tenin very patiently to the speeches o his brethren, he arose from his seat, and in a voice that could be heard all oyer the hall, asked the ministers present why tliey were all so disheartened. 4'fs there nothing we have to be thankful tor?" And tnen he went on and detailed liumerovs things for which they should offer thanks. 'fLet us 1116' said he "dcclair a day of Thanksgiving for the many blessings God has bestow ed upon ua dim 11 g the past year." His fervor heightened up tlie nearcs 01 ins listeners, aud in stead of declaring a Day of Fast ing, the Conference declared Day of Thanksgiving, and to this day 1 hanksgivmg Day has been ob served throughout the country This year it falls on the 30th inst., next Thursday, and we trust it will be observed in this city by the entire suspension of Business. Services will be held in the various churches.
