EDENTON, N.C.July 13th, IS04. COXVEXTIOXS. State Convention, August 8th, at Raleigh. Judicial convention, 1st Dis trict, Aug. 2nd, at Plymouth. The Postmaster General has ordered postmasters to partici l.'ttl n nnssible in poli- Ml. I A tics. If you want to test a Populist or a Republican, ask him how he stands 011 the county government question? Chairman Kav. s having called a Republican State Convention to meet at Raleigh August 30, Mr. V. S. Luck prints a long card questioning his right to call the convention and charging Haves with treason to his party. The proposition to allow States to tax National liank notes, Greenbacks and other Federal currency, to the same extent that silver and gold money is taxed has passed the House and will doubtless become the law. The most gigantic strike of this decade is on in the west. Most of the railroads leading in to Chicago are tied up. Several thousand desperate workmen there have put cn their war paint and every interest is suffering. It is stated that Pat. II. Wins ton is a candidate for Congress on the populists ticket in the tfi.. nf Washington. Pat has been a member of every party known to the people, and is only waiting for a new party to be born. Memphis, Tennessee, ' now claims a population of 90,000 and is growing rapidly, which is do ing pretty well for a tow' 11 which not many years ago, everybody wanted to get away iroin. Owing to sanitary reforms and drain age, it is now a healthy town. The Baltimore Herald says : "With New Mexico forming the forty-fifth star in the azure field, only Arizona, Utah, Oklahoma, the Indian Territory and Alaska would be out of the Union. Ari zona and Utah are tolerably cer tain to get in during the present Congress." It is estimated that there are over 4,000,000 people in the United States who live upon wages paid by railroad compa nies. All these are asked by Debs to starve, it necessary, in order to force Pullman to raise the wages of 2,000 employes to what they were before the panic. Ex A Kansas man has left the Pop ulist party on the ground that it "is run by lawyers without cli ents, by doctors without patients, by preachers without pulpits, by women without husbands, by farmers without farms, by finan ciers without finance, by educa tors without education, by states men out of a job." Hickory Press. Why do you rage and charge a wrong thing? G rover Cleveland and a Democratic Congress had nothing to do with bringing about the present state of affairs. This is but the result of thirty years of Republican misrule. It is true the present administration and Congress are not bringing about the reform they should, but be careful to lay the charge where it belongs. Scotch Scion. Madame Carnot, widow of the assassinated President of France, politely declined an offer of a pension, and gave the following reason, as honorable to her as her devotion to the memory of her husband is touching : "The chil dren and I thought that France by unanimously according mag nificent obsequies to M. Carnot, paid him the supreme and only homage worthy of the country and of himself." There is no sordid clay in the woman who acts thus and talks thus nobly. ELECTIONS IN NORTHCAR- OLINA. Although this is considered an off year, from the simple fact, that there is to be no national elections, yet what elections there are to be are equally as import ant. North Carolina under Demo cratic administration has been a typical government, and for years has been so recognized by all white men, and a large num ber of colored people, until a few Populists began to scatter discord and work up a feeling of dissat isfaction, because they" could not be what they wanted to be, because "they"couH net do what they wanted to do. Hut this op position amounts to nothing, and the great majority of white voters will still continue to up hold an administration that has made North Carolina what jit is. Considering such things as we have above referred to, our State elections arc important. Yes ex ceed inglv so, when we come to consider who is to be elected. A Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, and Associate Justices are to be elected. The Supreme Court has decided that they will be elected to fill out the unex pired terms oi their predecessors, and not for the full term of eight years. James E. Shepherd is Chief Justice of North Carolina, and was appointed by Governor Holt to fill the vacancy caused by the appointment of Merrimou, to be Chief Justice, Associate Justice J. C. McRae was appoint ed by Governor Holt, to fill the vacancy, caused by the death ol J.J. Davis. Associate Justice Armistead Uurwell was appoint ed by Governor Holt to fill the vacancy caused by the appoint ment of Shepherd to be Chief Justice. Associate Justice Avery was elected for a lull term oi eight years in 1888. The State will also elect eight Superior Court Judges.uine Congressmen, twelve vSolicitors, fifty State Sen ators, one hundred and twenty Representatives of the General Assembly who will elect a suc cessor to U. S. Senator, M. Y. Ransom, Democrat, whose term expires March 4th, 1895, and a Senator to fill the unexpired term of Senator Z. 1. Vance, deceased, which ends March 4th, 187. County officers all over the State will also be elected. The above is a list of what is to be done this Kail in the State Ta r bo r o Sou tlicrncr. . LATE NEWS Crops all over the State are reported as flourishing. North Carolina has but 3,702 foreigners, out o a population of 1,617,980. Col. E. G. Harrcll has been re-elected Secretary of the Teach ers' Assembly. Chief Justice Shepherd has taken charge of the Summer Law School at the University. It is widely reported that the present administration has saved $25,000,000 in pensions since it began. The Albemarle House, at K. City, has again changed hands, Mr. M. J. Sawyer having taken charge of same. An editor at Leghorn, named Bandi, was assassinated because hexlenounced the murder of Pres ident Carnot. The Elizabeth City Academy will be known hereafter under the name of the Atlantic Colle giate Institute. Gov. Carr has offered $100 re ward for the capture of Ed. S. Hart, of Craven county, who is wanted for house burning. Fantasy is said to be the coming nag, and it is predicted that she will lower Nancy Hanks' record. She has just trotted a mile in 2:10 and that is only as a starter. Judge Spier Whitaker, of the Fourth Judicial District. h?s re signed from the bench. Governor Carr has appointed W. R. Allen, of Wayne county, to fill the va cauev. The date of the State Fair is made one week later; that is, from October 23d to 28th inclusive, in order that exhibits may be brought here from the Virginia vState fair. Two violent earthquake shocks are felt at Constantinople. Sev eral persons are killed and much damage done. Thousands of per sons are camping out, afraid to enter their houses. Annual meeting of the Nation al Press Association was held at Asbury Park, N. J., last week. Several Noith Carolina editors were present with the purpose of having the next meeting at Ashe ville. GUARANTEED CURE. Wc authorize our advertised druggist to sell Dr. King's New . Discovery for Consumption, Coughs and Colds, upou this condition. If you are afflicted with a Cough, Cold or any Lung, Throat or Chest trouble, and will use this remedy as directed, giving it a fair trial, and experience no benefit, you may return the bottle aud have your money re funded. We could not make this offer did we not know that Dr. King's New Discovery could be relied on. It never disappoints. Trial bottles free at V. I. Leary 's Drugstore. Large size 50c aud? 1. 00. 2 FARMERS RECEIVE THE BENEFIT. Farmers, and others, living near the villages and towns are often heard saying this: "It is nothing to me whether the town builds up or not, I don't own a foot of real estate there, and never expect to do so. Such sometimes go even farther and denounce their local paper for giving so much of its space to ''whooping up" the aforesaid vil lage or town. If all such would give this matter a fair hearing and then pronounce upon it perhaps their judgment might be reversed. It is an admitted fact that a town which has one hundred peo ple in ' . attracts the notice of ov' : world far less than one w nich has a thousand; the latter with its increased population causes an enhanced valuation of all lands situated near by; it has more consumers to buy fruit, poultry, vegetables, butter, etc., and thereby keeps trade going on, where without such consum ers there would be no trade ex7 cept such as is made by the sel liiif of annual crops. Land wortli $10 an acre near a village of fifty inhabitants, would be worth $100 if the number was increased to a thousand; and if a city were br ilt the price of such laud situated near by would sell at higher rates. These being facts which admit ot no just de nial, our larmers should encour age their local papers instead of denouncing them when they are working for immigration. Give the editor help and recehe a part of the benefit yourselves. Ex. NOTICE. It is ordered that a Democratic County Convention be held at the Court House in Edenton, N. It is proposed to erect a beautiful and imposing structure in keeping with the affluence and philanthropy of the State Grand Lodge of Odd Fel lows. It is estimated that the new building will cost between $10,000 and $15,000, What It Has Done. About twentv vears Mr. Tames Bailey originated and put on the market the popular remedy, Bailey's Cholera Cure, for Dysen tery, Diarrhoea, Cholera Morbus, and all acute Stomach Troubles. The reputation it has made, the endorsement given it by everv one who has had occasion to use it, has proven a source of great satisfaction to its proprie tors. What it Will Do. I protest my in- . .1 nocence. wnatever oxner cen surable things I may be guilty of I am not a thief- I hope to es tablish my innocence. I am in Edenton to stay until the Court decides this matter whatever comes. I ask the people of Edenton in the name of common humanity and fair play not to condemn me until I have had that chance which is the prerogative of every citizen of being proven guilty before a jury, or acquitted. . It is easy for public opinion to hound an innocent man to death, but it is neither human or christ ian to do so. Therefore I beg for at least this much consider ation at the hands of the people of Edenton. Respectfully, Wm. K. Jonks. Having heard the charges against Mr. Wm.K. Jones we the j undersigned believe it to be but just and fair that lie be not con demned be-fore lie has been heard. All the evidence against him will be submitted to the Courts and then opinion can safely be formed. Therefore we recommend that the public suspend judge ment until lie has been tried and conviction or acquittal by the court is pronounced. Jno. F:. White, J. K. Rea, E.S. Norman, K. R.
