We are informed that the Re publicans of Chowan county are holding their primaries this week to select delegates to a county convention to be held in Edenton next Monday, the 20th. We understand that the county convention will select delegates to the State and Congressional conventions, and will decide whether to nominate county of ficers or not. LAWN PARTY. I you want to have a good time go to the Academy green to-night where a lawn party will be giv en bv the Edenton Band. The lawn will be illuminated with -- j - - lanterns, seats will be scattered here and there, good music will be furnished by the baud, and pretty young ladies will be pres ent to serve "Baltimore Cream." Go and help the band. They de serve encouragement. EDENTON ACADEMY, The Academy will open on Wednesday, Sept. 12th. Prof. Sledd will be at the Academy building on September the iothand 1 ith. from 9 a. m. to 12 m., and from 2 to 4 p. m., "or the purpose of enrolling and classifying pupils. He will be glad for as many as can conve niently to enroll on those days. He would like parents to come with their children. - POLICE COURT. Saturday last a fight occurred 011 King street between Johnny Rogerson and one Ned Holley, colored. Rogerson was fined 1 and costs; Holley discharged. On Monday a colored woman, Rachael. Skinner was tried for assaulting Sterling Gilliam, col., and fined $2 and costs, total $5.1 5. WILL MEET IN EDENTON. The Congressional Convention ot the People's party will meet 11 Edeuton on the 6th of Sep tember. THE NEW ACADEMY. The contract for the erection of the new Academy building las been awarded to Mr. J. W. Spruill at $3,265. Work will be gin at once. It wTill be a wood structure 48x64 feet, two stories. SUICIDE." A young white man by the name of Grubbs, a clerk in a bar room, at Plymouth, committed suicide Monday night last by shooting himselt through the lead with a pistol. No cause is assigned for the deed. HIGHEST TOWER. The public building of Phila delphia, when finished, will have the highest tower of any build ing in the world. It will be five liindred and thirty-seven feet ligh. The building covers four acres, and will be finished next year at a cost of ten million dol- ars. THE MASHER The single eyeglass, says a philosopher, is worn by the masher. . A western editor, in answer to the complaint of a subscriber that he did not give news enough, advised him, when news was scarce, to read the Bible, which, he had no doubt, would be news to him. The Democrats of Jerry Sim son s district, in Kansas., will make no nomination against him. They do not wish to deprive Congress of the pleasure of his picturesque presence. LOST OR MISLAID. RICHARD COX KILLS WALTER WEBSTER AND WILL BE TRIED FOR MANSLAUGHTER. Several weeks ago two colored men, Richard Cox and Walter Webster, engaged in a fight near Edeuton, which resulted in Webster being seriously cut by Cox. Cox was arrested and tried by Justice F. A. Whitewho required a bond for his appear ance at the next term of the Su perior Court. The bond was given and Cox was released. Monday night last Webster died from the wounds received. Officer Robinson was immediate ly sent for Cox, who was arrest ed, brought to Edeuton and placed in jail, where he will be held to answer to the charee cf manslaughter.
