A view of the whole State would give here and there indications of progress. The cotton milling business advances, and there are other industries that give good promise for the future. FARMING IN CHOWAN COUNTY. AN ARTICLE WRlTfRR FOR OUR TRADE ISSUE. This is preeminently an agri cultural section. The genial climate and fertile soil are well adapted to the cultivation of a large variety of crops. The two great staple crops are corn and cotton. Peanuts are also exten sively grown. The attentou of some of the most progressive farmers is be iug directed to the cultivation of tobacco, which has heretofore been neglected. Experienced tobacco growers of other portions of the country say that this is destined to become the most noted tobacco section of the State. They claim that our soil is capable of producing as fine to bacco and more of it per acre, than those sections now exten sively engaged in its production. The very unsatisfactory and unremunerative prices now ob tained for the staple crops are n ilnrpssiiwr to the average far .. ..J, J nif-r flint he is bep-inniner to re- ai;7e tjie necessity of diversify " - 1 o ' ' ing his agricultural interests, hence the attention of many is be - dircctc(1 to tiie cultivation 0f the market gardener's crops a few, in the recent past, with out any special training as mar t eardeer's, have been grow - , limited scale, and llave been fairly successful, greatest asricultur : . . , . , - - - al needs at present is skilled la bor to direct the trucking industry. We have one of the best regions, naturally, for the cultivation of the market garden er's crops that can be found in the State. Possessing a soil which re sponds so readily to the touch ot industry, and a climate so mild and salubrious, the people of Chowan county are exceedingly fortunate. Our lands are comparatively level. In many sections of the country large quantities of cattle can be raised without any cost, save a little attention in looking after them occasionally. We have large sections of wood land, commonly called pocosins, thickly set with reeds, which a ford splendid grazing, not only in spring and summer, but in fall and winter also. Our forests are covered with valuable timber. Pine, oak, cy press, iuniper, gum, ash, dog wood and persimmon are among the leading varieties. Pine seems to predominate. Saw mills are erect--d indiffer ent localities which cut up im mense quantities of timber for the markets abroad, and also for home consumption. Among the wild aninuls that roam our forests and along the water courses, may be lound, bear, deer, foxes, wild cats, rac coons, o'possums, squirrels, minks, otters, beavers, niuskrats &c.,thc pursuit of which often furnish exciting sport for lovers of the chase. Wild turkeys, partridges, snipes, woodcocks, hawks, eagles, crows, robins, larks and turtle doves are among the wild fowls which are eagerly sought after by the sportsman. Truly this is an inviting country to the immigrant, when we take into consideration its capabilities for wondwful devel- ments 111 its varied industries. We know of 110 section better adapted to the raising of poultry than the counties east 01 tne Chowan river, and no industry yields a better return of profits on amount invested than that of poultry raising. As yet we have no one extensively engaged in that business. W. 13. Feiion, Rockahock, Chowan county ,N.C. A MILLION I'RIICNDS.
