EDENTON, N.C. Dec. 6th, 1395 Condemn no man for not thinking as you think. Let every one enjoy the liberty of thinking ior himself. Congress convened Monday. Tuesday the President's message was read, which is a lengthy doc ument, but interesting in ali its details. The Norfolk Virginian , one of the best papers published in Vir ginia, is thirty years old. The Fisherman & Farmer offers its congratulation. It issaidGrover Cleveland has not the slightest idea of accept ing a nomination for the Presi dency should it be offered him by the Democratic party in 1896. The Berkley, Va., Graphic has in its issue of November 30th an illustration of Chowan County's Court House built in 173 , as recently illustrated in the Fish erman& Farmer. Thanks. The scheme of Senator Marion Butler, of North Carolina, to re organize the Senate along Pop ulist lines, did not succeed. He extended invitations to fifty-two Senators who are, known to favor the white metal to attend a caucus for the purpose of taking control of the Senate organization, but very few of those who received invitations attended the confer ence. Norfolk Ledger. "The country editor, as a rule, is not the man to yell for sympa thy, but in these piping times of peace, when day often pass with scarcely anything to break the monotony, and the weary editor has to write industriously against space he is deserving of pity. If the people would assist him a little by furnishing him with any items of news which they may chance to know, he would be able to give them a much better paper and his job would be a happier one." The greatest enterprise shown by any newspaper in North Car olina, and probably the finest in dustrial issue that has come from any press in the State, is the 36 page Cotton Mill edition of the Raleigh News & Observer sent out 011 Thanksgiving Day. It is nicely illustrated with the various cotton mills of the State and those who are operating them; besides it is filled with valuable information. The issue is not only a credit to the Nczvs & Observer office bnt to North Car olina, and, cannot fail to result in much good. To Brother Daniels and his entire staff, the Fisherman & Farmer offers its congratulation. This is the season of the year when the autumn leaves are scat tered in profusion. Sentimental persons give to these a friendly prominence, aud bestow upon .them a tenderness befitting the mystery which surrounds them. They are typical of our own helplessness. To-day we flour ish, to morrow we fall by the wayside. When you wander through the forest and trample under foot the poor fallen leaves you should pause and think of the end of al' things created. 'Twas but yesterday when these dead leaves were expanding un der the genial sunshine of spring time, now, they lie withered at your feet. Pick them up, tender ly handle them with care, for such is the course of human life. Ex. HE CITY AFFAIRS. Looked Alter ,by PjThe City Councilmen. In Session Last Tuesday. It is here you see yourselves as others see you. You smile on them, aud they smile back at you; you frown on them and you are re paid in kind. They are the re fiex of a town. If the town is doing business the newspapers will show it in its advertising columns. -If the merchants are spiritless, shiftless fellows, whose stores are jumbles of junk and jam, the newspapers wi'il show itby the lack of space the take If you want the world to know that you have a live town, you can only let it be known through its newspaper. Phnham. Minn. Bulletin. The merchant that advertises is the one who does the business. ,1-11 La "Well, but, auntie, what kind of Hog Is it?" "I bcv.ght him for a black and tan, but when he vas a few weeks old he looked like a setter, then lie broke out in spots like a coach doj. and just as I thought he was going to be a grey hound lie began to show the points of a bulldog and well, I oeally don't know what to call him!" Life. A Good Showing. From the Raleigh New s & Ob server s mammoth Cotton Mill edition we learn that there are now in operation 184 cotton mills in North Carolina, which contain 989,093 spindles and 24, 624 looms, giving employment to 24,825 operatives. The capi tal invested therein amounts to $16,710,600, and during the last year they , worked up 374,220 bales of cotton ninety per cent, of the cotton production of the State. Ninety-seven percent, ot the operatives are native Norlh Carolinians and niuetysthree per cent, of the money invested in the mills is North Carolina capi tal. Eighty-five per cent, of the managers of the mills are natives of North Carolina. SOCIETY; A CORRUPTION. The Society Woman a Parasite on The World's Heart-Growth. Mrs. A. D. T. Whitney in dis cussing society, with her girl friends, in December Ladies' Home Journal, has this stiirging charge to make against modern Society, as it is spelled with a capital S : "Society as a pursuit, an end, js a thing without a soul. 'Hie home spirit, from the sharing of which between home aud home it grew, has departed out of it. It is dead. It is corruption. A professional society woman is a parasite upon the world's heart growth; helping, as a microbe of disease, to eat out its vitality. There is a terrible reaction in the influence of what we make society to be, without its true heart and centre. It is to blame for the many confused problems or" our time; it is responsible for the frantic turning of the world upside down. Conventionalities, false effort and res riction crowd 111 upon and choke cut our most beautiiul and sacred realities. True homes become more and more scarce. Society women abandon them; they make of them mere arrival and departure stations in the rush of a whirling round. Women who cannot or who will not maintain the mod ern artificial conditions, are dis couraged and repelled from any home-making at all. They are forced, through the very need of their natures, to outside work and interest for fellowship; and so there is a great deal attempt ed, from strong desire for the best, that is yet, in its turn, un true, one sided; adding a fresh derangement to our perplexed systems and theories our tran sitional social aud political economies." American missionaries Safe. Minister Terrell has cabled the State Department that all of the American misssonaries iuTurkey are safe and are properly pro tected. A Sufferer Cured "Every season, from the time I was two years old, I suffered dread fully from erysipelas, which kept growing worse until my hands were almost useless. The bones softened bo that they would bend, and several of my fingers are now crooked from this cause. On my hand I carry large scars, which, but for AYER'S , Sarsaparilla, would be sores, provided I " was alive and able to carry anything. Eight bottles of Ayer's Sarsaparilla cured me, so that I have had no return of the disease for more than twenty years. The first bottle seemed to reach the spot and a persistent use of it has perfected the cure." O. C. Davis, Wautoma, Wis. rsaparilla 11 THE ONLY WORLD'S FAIR AYES' S FILLS Promote Gcsd Digestion.
