Thurman was a fa- mous jurist, statesmau, and in 1 888 the nominee of the Dem ocratic Party for Vice President on the ticket with Cleveland and was defeated with him. lie was of North Carolina descent, being a grandson of Nathanial Allen, of this place. We append the following by Graham Daves, of Newberne: "The death recently of the Ion. Allen G. Thnrman recalls o remembrance the fact that the distinguished Ohio statesman was descended from a North Carolina family, one prominent, m times past, in the Albemarle region. Senator Thurman was a grand- sou of Nathaniel Thurman, (after whom he was named,) of Eden- ton, who was a partner in the prominent firm of Collins, Dick erson & Allen, of that town. This firm was largely concerned, in the latter part of the last cen tury, in the development of the rich swamp lauds in the neigh borhood of Lake Scuppernong, Washington county. Nathaniel Allen had two chil dren William Allen (better known as "Blue Jeans") and Kate. Kate Allen was married to the Rev. Pleasant Thurman, a Methodist minister, then station ed at Kdenton, and went to live in Lynchburg, Va., where their son, Allen Grauberry, the sub ject of his notice, was born. It is mentioned 111 our Colonial Records Vol. II., I think that in July, 1728, Dr. George Allen, great-grand-father of Hon. Allen G. Thurman, and Sir Richard Everard the last of the "Pro prietary" Governors of North Carolina, were indicted in Edenton for a fracas; and it may be of interest to add that Sir Richard Everard is said to have been an ancestor of ex-President Benjamin Harrison. Senator Thurman's ancestors were residents of North Carolina from the earliest days. At the North Caroliua Metho dist Conference in session at E. City, the following appointments were announced by the Bishop on Mondav for this, the .: ELIZABETH CITY DISTRICT: R. B. John, Presiding Elder. Elizabeth City, J. H. Hall. Pasquotank Circuit, H. E. "Taffy is better than epitaphy," says some one. It is sometimes difficult amidst the restraints and couventionalties of everyday life to speak our love and interest in the welfare of tho.;e near us in the daily life. The opportunity doe; nr t seem to come; the heart do-s not seem to open itself free lv The husband thinks nis wife incomparable; out uieir talk is ot business, household ex penses and social engagements and there seems to be no point at which the tender speeches of their couitship can be renewed. Tlif wife believes her husband to be the greatest man in Amer ica. but ?he fears to tell him so lest he call her "a sentimental little "-oosie " The children are not unmindful of the debt they owe their parents, but their na e and acquired independence keens them from speaking of it, and their parents wonder sadly if their boys aud girls are groxv ing away from them, now that they are growing towards man hood and womanhppd. By and by calamity breaks up the "long habit of reserve. The loved one passes out of the daily presence, aud then the words of love are spoken. They are not insincere words, but they are fruitless, for the moment of their opportunity is nast. It was uoti.he crucified Jesus who most needed the anointing from Mary's precious vace.
