Privott, of Wilson, is in the city placing his orders for one hundred thousand herrrings. The negro who forged a check on J. A. Woodard was tried last week and discharged on payment of costs. Rev. J. L. Rumley preached last Sunday at Hertford. Rev. Oliver Ryder, of Hertford filled his pulpit here. The case of J. W. White vs N. & S. R. R. Co., at last week's court, resulted in a judgment for $500.00 in favor of plaintiff. . Barlow Bros. Minstrels will appear at Rea's Opera House on Saturday night. This is one of the best troupes on the road. Jas. R. Elliott and wife have arrived. Mr. Elliott will open ajob printing office over J. H. Bell's tin shop. Call to see him. The fish hatchers are spawn ing fish at Mackey's Creek. They have quite a fine steamer, on board of which about forty men are at work hatching fish. The lecture by Dr. C. S. Gilbert closed her school at "Milldam" last Wednesday under the most fa vorable auspices. We-ofrer her our congratalations for her sue-, cessful teaching. Rev. Dr. Overby shipped his first, box of asparagus last.Tues- day, it was in fine order and brought a fancy price. This shipment is the beginning of the truckidg season here. Lyman A. Anderson Esq., of Staten Island, N. Y., who has been visiting his niece Mrs. E. I. Sawyer near the "Shipyard." returned home last week. He expresses himself as being well pleased with this country. The closing exercises of Miss Ella Lee Gilbert's school at Belcross, will take place Friday evening, April 23d. The exer cises will consist of songs, reci tations, dialogues, etc. The public is invited to attend. The following committee of ladies have been appointed by Sawyer's Creek church, to so licit contributions for the pur pose of painting the church, viz: Mrs. D. M. Spence, Mrs. H. C. Ferebee and Miss Ella Gilbert. This is for a good cause, and all should give as liberal as possible. Messrs. E. I. Sawyer and Jos. L. Sanderlin, have been appoint ed as agents for the "Biblical Re corder," 'and will make a can vas of this section. The ' Re corder" is the eslablished Bap tist paper of North Carolina. -2nd the best religious paper we know of, and we hope the gentlemen appointed will have tlie utmost success, as they offer special in ducements. Mr. John Creekmore lost a valuable horse last week by a singular accident. Mr. Creek more was putting the harness on the horse when he became enraged and kicked at him (Creekmore) the horse without his foot touching the ground, broke his leg above the knee protruding the bone through the skin, The horse was rendered useless and had to be killed.
