ONE OF THEM. The Old Negro Mammy Never be Forgotten. Will Perhaps one more record of a venerated old Virginia -'Mammy" may interest your readers. I need not dwell on her untiring care for the love to us little ones, and her faithfulness aud devo tion to my mother. My earliest recollections are of a large white table cloth spread upon the store room floor and our Mammy upon her knees before a large cone of white "loaf sugar," which with a stout knife and hammer she Was cutting into little blocks for the sugar dish. If little lumps flew off on the floor it was ours to scramble for. When the Union army sur rounded us "Mammy" was the last to leave us. Only when her husband and children had all departed did she come in crying bitterly to kiss us all around "kood by." Her husband havs inir threatended to tret another wife if she loved the white folks b tter than him. When the Yankee soldiers crowded into her neat room they said to her, "Old woman you are a fool to stay here and cook for these people (cook having gone), don't you know you are free?" "Humph!" she replied, "I didn't ved for such as you to come here to tell me I was free. I was free long 'fore you come here, the Lord Jesus Christ made me free from the law of sin ar.'l death. Now you go along 'bout your business and I'll tend to mine." She had long been subject to severe sore throats which my mother always mopped and ten ded carefully, but soon after her husband took her to Washington she was taken sick with one of those attacks and neglect made it fatal. She passed awav bit- terly regretting that she left her old home, saying: "Old miss would cured her." We shall surely meet her " up there " where she is in truth free from sin, and washed white in the blood of the Lamb, among the faithful around His throne.- Ex. Peculiar Characteristics of the Small Boy. An exchange, which has evis dently been a close student of nature as it is to be found in the average boy says: A boy will tramp 47 miles in one day on a rabbit hunt and be limber in the evening, when if you ask him to go across the street to borrow a two inch au ger, he will be as still as a meat block. Of course he will. And he will go swimming all day and stay in ihe water three hours at a time, aud dive, and the next morning he will feel that the unmeasured insult has been of rered him when he is told by his mother to wash his face care fully, so as not to leave the score ol the ebb aud flow so plain to be seen on his gills. And he will wander about the bed of a dry creek all the after noon piling up a pebble fort and nearly die off when his big sister wants him to pick up a basket of chips for the parlor stove. And he will spend the biggest part of a day trying to corner a stray mule for a ride, but feels that life's charms have fled when he comes to drive the cows home. And he'll turn a ten acre field up side down for ten 1 inch angle worms, aud wish for the voiceless tomb when the garden demands at tention. But all the same when you want a friend who will stand by you, enlist one of the bovs. Two years ago R. J. Warren, a druggist at Pleasant Brook, X. V., bought a small supply of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy, lie sums up the result as follows: "At that time the goods were unknown in this section; to-day Chamberlain's Cough Remedy is a household word." If the sun shines, it seems to shine brighter, and the singing of the birds seems 'the sweeter. The flowers of Easter appear to be the more beautiful on Easter morn, and their per fume more fragrant. The loveliest roses that God ever grew seem to cluster more beautifully on thaj day, and the lilies lift their heads in thank fulness. The grasp of the hand seems firmer and more honest than on any other day, and the smiles of our friends warmer, brighter and more gladsome. It is that on Easter morn "a new light broke in on the hearts and hopes of men" aud since that memorial morn that light has continued to brighten the path way of mankind, aud the gates beyond the silent sky have been kent onen that all who choose may enter there. How beauti ful indeed is Easter. It is a part of the story of the little child who ages ago came to us at Bethlehem; of Him who, in the splendor of His manhood, was laid low in the tomb, and who on the third day rose, "bursting the bars of death and opened unto us the gates of ever lasting life." It is a reminder that Christ, who died, rose ap-aiu and that He stands at the o-ates ovine; to humanity, "Be- cause I live ye shall live also." It is the knowledge that way bevond the sunlight, and the light of the stars, Christ awaits us, to conduct us where angels sing and where God will clothe us with everlasting life. But whether the sun shines or the birds sing, or not, Easter is ah ways beautiful. Every human soul who knoweth that "the Re deemer liveth" has a light which no cloud can darken, and the mu sic of God's word is the sweetest song of them all. How beauti ful then is Easter, aud is there any wonder that we should hail the morn with glad anthems? No-To-Iiac for fifty Cents. A CHILD'S PLEA, A pretty little golden haired rirl of seven vears walked timid ly into a New Jersey police court room the other day and asked for "the man who sent my mam ma to jail." The judge happened to overhear her remark and ask ed the little miss what she want ed. Tears came into her eyes as she turned to the judge and ask ed, "Did you send my mamma to jail?" when told her name, the judge recalled that a short time before he had sentenced a woman to jail for sixfy days for drunken ness and told the child so. Look ing up into the kindly face of the judge she asked: "Judge, did you ever have a mamma?" and then, choked with sobs, she could control her feelings no longer and begged piteously lor her mother's release. "Your mamma has been very naughty," said the judge. "She gets drunk aud abuses her neighbors." "But she is good to me, and I love her," sobbed the golden haired pleader, "and if you'll let her go I I won't let her be naughty any more I love her so. Please, please, oh, please let her go." That was too much for the gray haired, kind hearted magistrate, and as he turned away to order the release of the mother, he used his haudkerachief vigor ously and his voice was husky from a "bad cold," which had suddenly developed. Mrs. A. Inveen, residing at 720 Henry St., Alton, 111., suffer ed with sciatic rheumatism for over eight months. She doctored for it nearly the whole of this time, using various remedies recommended by friends, and was treated by the physicians, but received no relief. She then used one and a half bottles of Chamberlain's Pain Balm, which effected a complete cure. This is published at her request, as she wants others similarly affiicU ed to know what cured her. The following bill passed third reading in the House by vote of 66 to 23: That after the ratificatiod of this act it shall be unlawful for any one to give or sell to any minor to use or smoke cigaretts, and any in ' nor found so smoking cigaretts, shall be a competent witness to prove from whom he received such cigaretts, and the evidence so given shall not be used against such minor for vio lation ol tins act. mat any one who sells or gives to any minor any cigaretts or any minor found smokeing cigaretts shall be guil ty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction shall be fined not more than ten dollars or imprisoned not more than thirty days." The bill was introduced by Mr. Sutton, of Cumberland, who spoke forcibly and with intense earnestness in the support. He gave the testimony of prominent physicians, showing the frightful effects of cigarette smoking, among them Dr.Murphy, of the Western Insane Asylum, who traces insanity in some patients to this terrible vice. Mr. Sutton declared that 200 young lives were lost annually in North Carolina through the habit of cigarette smoking, and pathet ically told how his own son had been one the victims. Opposition to the bill was from the manufacturers stand point but Mr.Eddir.s focussed the argument when said: The quest ion is, which is worth most to the State her boys or cigarette manufacturers?"
