ELIZABETH CITY, May 21, 1897. STAND BY YOUR TOWN. To stand by yor town means more than to simply build up your own individual business interests and beautify and im prove your residence. It means begin at home first, but not to be uncompromisingly wrapped up in yourself, regardless of your fcllowmau and all the surrounds ing circumstances. It means to go to work and stimulate every legitimate enterprise by giving all the friendly encouragement you can, or by uniting your industry, influence rnd capital in the common cause. Cultivate a public spirit and help your neighbor, either by kind words or a helping hand. Every industry in the place, it makes no difference how small, should be given careful consid eration. As far as possible give these industries your patronage instead of sending off your orders. If you have a quarrel on hand have manhood enough to fight it on its merits and don't bring it into waterworks, streets, churches, schools or anything that tends towards building up and keeping pace with the times. vSpeak well of new and deservable prospects and everything that pertains to the welfare of your topn. Proclaim all that is worthy and quietly endeavor to remedy the evils. Quit abusing your neighbor and get yourself straight. Encourage every one, espec ially new men, to come in and settle among you, particularly those who are worthy and active, whether they have capital or not. Their labor is worth money. Those who have the capital should buy lots, build houses or tear down and remodel old ones. In fact, do all you can to advance the general interest, for as effect iollows cause, so certainly will every enterprise of merit repay every citizen. We cannot live unto ourselves, nor courage any movement in behalf of the place without inflicting upon our selves a personal injury. The Westfield (Ind.) Nezus prints the following in regard to an old resident of that place: "Frank McAvoy, for many years in the employ of the L., N. A. & C. Ry. here, says: 'I have used Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy for ten years or longer-and never with out it in my family. I consider it the best remedy of the kind manufactured. I take pleasure in recommending it." It is a specific for all bowel disorders. For sale by W. W. Griggs & Son. NOTICE!
