A year before Jeffer son penned his immortal Declar ation of Independence, North Carolina adopted the Mecklen burg Declaration. So I suppose three cheers for the Old North State." Bateman has left on a business trip. Mr. W. J. Williams spent last Sunday in Baltimore. Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Yaekel have returned to Baltimore. Mr. Tolin G. Williams left Wednesday for Nag's Head. Mrs. Win. Leary. Jr., has re turned from Scotland Neck. Mr. aud Mrs. D. D. Kaper are spending a few days at Nag's Head. Mr. J. H. Bell has been quite ill this week, but is now cons valscent. Mrs. Walter Leary and three children, have gone to Peters burg, Va. Mr. R. A. Warren, of the Branning store, is on the sick list this week. Mr. McKey, the druggist, has gone home to Dunn, N. C, to visit his mother. Mr. Thos. Elliott of Norfolk is spending a few days with friends in the city. Wallace Winborue Esq., has returned from a business trip to New York City. Mr. T. D. Byrum, accompan ied by his son, left Thursday I for Newport News. Miss Mary Pruden and com pany, Miss Pond, are spending the week at Hertford. Miss Mary Rea returned Thursday from a visit with friends at Berkley, Va. The steamer Haven Bell will carry an excursion to Nag's Head Saturday night. Fare for round trip, $1.00. Miss Susie Ziegler returned heme from"Eiizabeth City Tues day, accompanied by Miss Mary Sawyer of that place. Mr. H. E. Williams aud fam ily, left Wednesday for Nag's Head, where they will remain during the summer. Mrs. Bell and daughter, Myra, of Elizabeth City, are in the city this week, the guests ot Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Bush. The number of bicycles in the city is increasing fast. There are now about 125 in town, and the number is increasing every day. Miss Jauie Baldroin, who has so acceptably held the position of milliner, at Newman's for the season, left Wednesday for her home at Richmond, Va. The steamers Pettit and Lucy were in port this week. They were the first boats of the new Pettit line from Edenton to Nor-, folk. Messrs. Wixon & Small are agents at this place. Parties intending to purchase a bicycle should see the Prog ress wheel, manufactured by Ames & Frost, Chicago. Saub pie wheel can be seen, and its merits explained bv calling on Jas. H. Holmes at'w. O. Elli ott's store. A yachting club has been or ganized in this city and they have pmchased a beautiful steam yacht which will arrive in a few days. With the lovely sheet of water we have, it is a wonder there has not been several steam yachts here before this. The 4th of July was not obs served in this city. With the exception of now and then a lonesome fire-cracker report, there was absolutely no remind er of the glorious fourth. Is it possible there is a lack ot pat riotism? O LI DEN, Clio wan County. The fruit crop is very short; vegetables plentiful. Crops have improved very rapidly for the past few days. Mr. W. H. Brinkley Esq., came home from Alligator this week on the sick list, but will return in a few days, as he is better. Warwick Baptist Sunday school, July 4th, was a grand success. lhe recitations, dias logues and speaking were fine. There was a very laree crowd present. The trustees of Warwick High School have secured the services of Prot. W. D. Welch as princk pal for the ensuing year. The school will be opened the first Monday in August. W UNION, Hertford County. Mr. By rum is in town 011 a visit to his children. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Howard are on a visit to friends and relatives in Gates. Mr. J. D. Parker is - quite sick now, we wish for him a speedy recovery. Mr. Joe Lawrence who was hurt veiv badlv last week we are glad to note irimproving. We are glad to report at this writintr Miss Cora Holloman and little brother much better. Miss Kate Newsome and Mrs Parker, her grandmother, were in town Tuesday on a visit to relatives. Mrs. Tadlock accompanied by her daughter Mrs. Felps paid her daughter Mrs. H. P. Sewell a short visit last week. Mr. Sid Jenkins who fell from the hotel window in Anlander died last Wednesday, we extend our deepest sympathy to the be reaved family. S. Mrs. Willie Allfreind, of Greensboro, is visiting her sister Mrs. R. O. Bagley here this week. Mr. R. O. Bagley's family spent Sunday with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Dudley, at Hickory, Va. Mr Zack Goodwin, of E. City, the contractor came Tuesday to commence work on the new Baptist chapel. Rev. R. G. Poyner spent sev eral days last week at Land of Promise, Va., visiting his sister, Mrs. Sallie Poyner. The family of Mr. Virginius Gilbert, of Norfolk, has been visiting friends and relatives at Northwest aud this place for the past week. We have had very little rain here since the heavy hail storms of June 1 2th and 13th. Crops and gardens are suffering for the want of rain. Mr. Jordan Lee is the new contractor to carry the mail from Moyock to Tulls, in place of J. J. Morse, whose time ex pired June 30th. Messrs. J. F. Cox and Jasper Jard left Saturday on a pleasure trip to Virginia Beach and Ocean View, and vicinity, tak ing in the 4th of July. They returned hom Tuesday. Miss Minnie Wilson returned home Wednesday after a very pleasant visit with friends and relatives at Norfolk and vicinity, and left again Saturday to visit relatives in Elizabeth City Rev. N. P. Stalliugs returned home Sunday evening from Poplar Branch, where he has been holding a protracted meet ing. There was eight new members added to the church as the result of the meeting. Wednesday evening, June 30, at the residence of Mr. aud Mrs. A. J. Davis, of Moyock, N. C, in the presence of a few special friends, Mr. Alpheus F. Holt, of Moyock, and Miss Ida Ashbv, of Tulls, were married by Rev. N. P. Stalliugs. They left immeds iately after the ceremony, for Tulls,' where a reception was given them at the residence of the bride's sister, Mrs. James Northan. The bride was dressed in white chiffon with lace and flowers. The presents were both handsome and numerous aud very appropriate. The happy couple will reside at Moyock, May good luck attend them.
