SENOR GAROVAS KILLED.
SHOT DOWN IN COLD BLOOD
BY AN ANARCHIST.
SPAIN'S PRIME MINIS
TER.
The Murderer Declared
He Killed the Premier
"in Accomplishment
of Just vengeance."
The assassination of the Prime
Minister of Spain, Senor Cauo
vas Del Castillo, who was shot
and killed by an Italian anar
chist, whose name is believed to
be Michelo Angine Colli, at the
baths of Santa Agueda 1 st Sun
day afternoon, was undoubtedly
cold-blooded and premeditated.
Golli deliberately watched for
an opportunity to kill the Span
ish statesman, and he only fired
when he had no chance of mis
sing. Iu fact, the assassin, who
was arrested almost immediately
after the Premier fell dead at
the feet of his wife, has declared
as such to the examining mags
istrate. The Prime Minister
lingered for sometime in agony
and passed away with the cry of
"Long Live Spain." further
details of the assassination show
that Senor Canovas del Gastillo
and his wife were present Sun
day morning at the celebra
tion of mass in the chapel at
tached to the baths. After the
mass the Premier was reading
and conversirg with some rev
porters, when the assassin ap
proached and fired three shots
at him with a revolver, hitting
him in the forehead, chest and
left ear. The wounded man fell
to the ground crying, "Assassin
long live Spain."
The Premier was carried to
his room and died shortly after
extreme unction had been ad-
ministered tv him by a priest of
the Dominican Order.
The murderer, who was im
mediately seized by people who
were in the vicinity of the scene
of the crime, was severely han
dled, and might have been kiK
led had it not been for protec
tion afforded him by a number
of c'vil guards, who soon ran to
the sceue of assassination. The
prisoner, who declared he had
killed the Premier "in accom
plishment of just vengeance," at
first gave the name of Rinaldi,
and claimed that his deed was
the outcome of an extensive an
archist conspiracy. Later, how
ever, the assassin confessed that
his real name was Michelo An-
geline Golli, that he was 26 years
of age, a native of Boggia, near
Naples, and that he left Italy
and came to Spain in 1896.
fter reaching Spain, Golli, ac
cording to his own confession,
resided at Barcelona, and partic
ipated in doings of various an
archist associations at that place.
After sojourning at Barcelona
for some time Golli visited
France and Belgium and re
turned to Spain in July last.
After his return the anarchist
seemed to have completed plans
for the assassination of the Pri me
Minister. He left Madrid for
Santa Agueda at the saine time
as Senor Canovas Del Castillo,
and awaited an opportunity to
assassinate the statesman. In
appearance Golli is of medium
height, wears a full beard and
spectacles, and his demeanor is
that of a quiet, law-abiding citi
zen. He says he is satisfied with
having done "his duty," and as,
scrts that he had no personal
grudge against the Premier and
was merely obeying orders re
ceived from his superiors in a
secret society to which he be'
longed.
Spanish newspapers express
great indignation at Golli s
c;ime. Even journals that have
Republican leanings praise the
services of the deceased states
ma.i.
It is always gratifying to res

A Prayer For Guidance.
Father of all, graciously look
upon us as a family now seeking
to behold thy face. As the morn
ing light is thine, so the bless
ing of the whole day must come
from Thee. Guide us with
thine eye, we humbly pray thee,
and give thine angels charge
concerning us, lest at any time
we dash our foot against a stone.
Above all, grant unto us large
gifts of the holy spirit. We do
not pray for bread alone, but for
the bread of life that cometh
down from heaven. For one
another and for our absent
friends we would fervently pray.
Bless the old and the young, and
with the sick and the fain tine
be thou very gentle. Watch
over those who are full of care
and speak comfortably to those
to whom wearisome days and
nights are appointed. Sanctify
our success, and may our fail

may be and overflow of divine

Sense.
Any sarsaparilla is sarsapa
rilla. True. So any tea is tea.
So any flour is flour. But grades
differ. Vou want the test. It's
so with sarsaparilla. There are
grades. You want the best. If
you understood sarsaparilla as
well as you do tea and flour it
would be easy to determine.
But you don't. How should
you? When you are going to
buy a commodity whose value
you don't know, you pick out
an old established house to
trade with, and trust their ex

when buying sarsaparilla.

Doctor" Davis, ihe Ne

County, Arrested at
Raleigh.
1 1
HIS VICTIM 11 YEARS OLD.
T1IK CKIMK WAS COMMITTI-.H A
MONTH AGO, AND HIS
VICTIM HAS SINCE
1)1 KD OP HKK ' '
INJUR IKS.
The ATcws & Observer tells of
of an important arrest made at
Raleigh Monday night, when
Officer Lambeth caught George
Davis, Alias Dr. Davis, wanted
in Chowan county.
Davis criminally assaulted a
little 1 1 -year old colored girl in
Chowan county about a month
ago, inflicting such injuries upon
her that she has since died. A
reward was at once offered for
him by the State and descrip
tions 01 him sent out all over
the State. And Monday night
he was captured at his home iu
the Fourth ward of Raleigh.
The News & Observer says:
He is well known here, hav
ing worked and resided here all
his life. It is not known that he
was ever before in any serious
trouble.
About a year ago he went off
down to the eastern part of the
State to work he says to Nor
folk. It was while he was in that
section that the crime with
which he stands charged was
committed. He returned to
Raleigh last week. The rape was
committed July 8th.
Davis denies bitterly that he
is the guilty man, and declares
that he was in Norfolk when the
crime was committed. But Davis'
description fits too accurately
the description of the Davis who
committed the crime for there
to be any doubt about his ident
ity. However, to guard against
any possible mistake Chief of
Police Norwood yesterday after
noon had some pictures of Davis
taken and sent them to the
sheriff of Chowan county, ac
companied by an accurate writ
ten description of the man.
It is expected that an officer
will reach here either to-night
or to morrow to take Davis back
to Chowan to answer for his
fiendish deed.
The charge will be a double
one rape and murder and if
he is is really the man wanted
there will be 110 chance for him
to save his neck.
NOT THE RIGHT MAN.
Since the above was put in
type, later news from Raleigh
says :
George Davis, the negro who
was arrested here last Monday
night, on the charge of raping
and murdering an 11 -year-old
colored girl near Edcii'ou, Chow
an county, on July 8th, has been
released.
He was set free by Chief of
Police Norwood yesterday after
noon 011 receipt of a telegram
from the authorities at Edeuton
saying that they failed to recog
nize their man " D. Davis, alias
Daniel Webb, " from the pic
tures sent them ; and that Davis
had lived at Edeuton for six
years previous to committing;
the crime.
Under these conditions, of
course George Davis could not
be held, though the description
given of " D. Davis " fits him ex
actly and he has been in that
section of the State for the past
year.
There is a reward of $200 for
D. Davis, the man who commits
ted the crime. He is about 5
feet, 7 inches high ; black, with
a decayed snaggle tooth and
gray hair. He stoops a 11 d
walks sideling ; is gizzard-footed
and bottle-toed.
BOY BATHER DROWNED.
Little Felix Robbins, of Char

evening. The sea was unusually
heavy and a big breaker tore
the boy from the life line, to
which he was clinging, and
swept him outward before the
eyes of . his horrified mother.
Diligent search was made for
the recovery of the body, but to
no purpose.

THI2 GOVERNOR IS ASKED TO
ISSUE A -PROCLAMATION OR
DERING THE LYNCH 1TES
i AND THEIR ARKS FROM
THE STATE.
Raleigh, N. C, Aug. 10.
(gpecial) Governor Russell has
received a stirring appeal to
come to the rescue and drive
from the State the vile "Sancti
fied Band," which has afflicted
some of the eastern counties.
The letter says: "We beg you
to stop violations of the laws of
God and man, which are dis'.
turbing the good people of our
section. There is a band among
us known as the "Lynchites,"
going about in what they call
"arks" or floats, and who are
teaching the people that no mat
ter what they do, so long as they
are 'sanctified' it is no sin. The
result is they are parting man
and wife. The women claim to
become sanctified and then what
ever they do is 110 sin. These
people are telling women that
after sanctification they can be
any man's spiritual wife. They
are demoralizing the whole
county, ruining young women,
and bringing strife among the
people. They go so far as to
say that niinisteis who have
been preaching God's word for
twenty and forty years ought to
be killed. Young women are
drowning their offspring in num
bers. Many are going crazy.
The leaders are the meanest
and the lowest people in the
world, and were driven from
Virginia on account of their be
haviour in that State. We ask
you to issue a proclamation that
all these arks and all that have
joined these Lynchites to leave
our State. If you aesire to know
more write the sheriffs of Beau
fort, Carteret, Pamlico, Onslow
and Pitt comities. It is alleged
by some that these people use a
horse-tamer's drug. We pray
you to give ns relief. If you do
not do something, Governor, flie
people will, but they ask you to
grant relief."
Private Secretary Alexander
says the matter will be at once
laid befoie the solicitors, so pros
ecutions can be made. The mat
ter will be pushed.

Losing

You naturally lose flesh In
the summer and running down
Is so easy. You get a little
weaker each day without hard

appetite, headache, weakness
of the muscles, disturbed sleep,
weakness of memory, and these
are the beginning of nervous

temporary relief, but what you
need is a food for body, brain

Lillian Madison's Brother
Love Affair is Supposed to
have caused the rash
act.
Wednesday night, on the C.
& O. passenger train, between
Richmond and Norfolk, Va.,
Charles S. Madison, a well-
known Richmond man, about
30 years of age, committed sui
cide by shooting himself through
the head. He was a brother of
Lillian Madison, whose sensa
tional murder by Cluverious, in
Richmond over a decade ago,
shocked the entire continent.
The cause of the young man's
rash act could not be ascer
tained among the passengers
or from the conductor. It is
probable that his love affair
had something to do with it,
a note, bidding his sweetheart
a farewell, being found among
his effects.
ELECTIONS NEXT FALL.
There Will Be Enough to Keep
Politicians Guessing.
There will be a number of
interesting elections held in No
vember of this year, and politics
promises to be lively. New
York City will elect a mayor
for what is known as Greater
New York. The State will elect
a chief judge of the Court of
Appeals and a new Assembly.
Ohio is to choose a Governor, a
State ticket and a Legislature.
Iowa is to choose a Governor.
Virginia a Governor and a full
State ticket. Massachusetts is
to choose a full State ticket and
a Legislature, and the free sil
ver line is to be drawn there.
Pennsylvania will elect a State
treasurer and an Auditor Gtns
eral. New Jersey will elect
State Senators and members of
the Legislature.
The two great Senatorial con
tests are in Ohio and Maryland
A State Comptroller and Clerk
of the Court of Appeals will also
be elected in the latter State.
Nebraska holds an election lor
Judge of the Supreme Court and
Regents lor the State University.
Its returns will throw some light
upon Bryanism in the country
west of the Missouri. The city
of Detroit elects a mayor on No
vember 2d. This contest may
be fought upon municipal issues,
or along national lines. Until
the contest develops further no
prediction as to the significance
of the returns can be made.
The contest in Kentucky for
Clerk of the Court of Appeals
will bring out a good sized vote,
and there is not a State in the
Union which in the present con
dition of partizan warfare is
more important.
Kentucky was saved for Mc
Kinley last year by the narrow
est kind of a plurality, clearly
attributable to the votes of the
gold standard Democrats. This
year the gold Democrats are de
termined to make a contest of
their own, that their party
strength may be more fully dem
onstrated. To (uro Con t 1 pat ton I'orcror.
