ELIZABETH CITY, November 19, 1897 "To see our French selves as others Criticism, see us," is an ofl quoted but sel dom-meant wish. If realized we declare the mirror 1 warped or that is not our true selves we see. So it is when one reads Ferdinand Brunetiere's paper in a November magazine. The America and Americanisms over which we so plume ourselves are not depicted. Instead, we find we are just the plain every day folk, only "a little more so or, to translate Mr. lirunatiere's Latin quotation, "our home is sufficient when one wishes to estimate humanity correctly.' With inimitable French humor many of our frailties and con ceits are hinted at rather than described, and oue falls to won Bering why Americans do such foolish things. On the whole the essay is pleasant reading, for while one winces under "Amer ican Youthfulness," and "Cosmo politauifm," one is grateful for the laud of our higher universU ties and for manv nther clever comments. The usual proc Th&nkggiving. lamations nams ing many causes for rejoicing, have been issued by tke President and the Governor, getting aside November 25th as a day f thanksgiving. This is - v an American institution, insep arably allied with the church ; and the feeble attempts at hu tnor bv partisan papers are as futile as if aimed at Christian ity itself. As is well known, this paper is thoroughly Demo eralic, but leels that it can give thanks to Almighty God as well under a proclamation of Presi dent McKinley as one from Mr. Bryan's pen. Were an order is sued for a day of Mourning we could find sufficient cause for tears ; but there are also many tilings tor which we can give thanks, forerettiner tears and heartaches for one day at least. The North Carolina paper that so slightingly speaks of the sac red occasion, and seeks in vain to make political capital from the proclamations, should find great cause for thanksgiving in that it is allowed to misname itself the Democratic organ, and to .stultify Democracy with Pops ulist "principles. At least for one day let us foruet politics, creeds, and misfortunes, and kneel around a common altar in thanksgiving. It should be, and justly is, a raat ter of great pride Not in the South. among us South erners, that our women, the no blest in creation, have never so far forgotten their womanhood as to uusex themselves for "charity," or lesser cause than necessity. We have heard of charity Balls., Bazaars, Tourna ments and Tiocaderos but the latest scheue;.comes from Scran ton, Pennsylvania. The -'ladies" what a -sadly misused word schemed and planned that to raise a little money for a mis sionary debt they would work as street car conductors on "Trolly Day." Costumes 'costs ing far more than the profits would be were ordered, and hus bands innocently dreaming of old dresses made over and last winter'6 hats restrimmed, were Mystified as to what the great sacrifice would be. But, greatly to the credit of manhood in the Keystone State, the pastors aae opposing the scheme and the jaunty costumes may not be used after all, A charity that de- m&nds such degradation makes the very name odious aad befouls womanhood. Two thousand women, have called on murderer Luetgert m his Chicago cell, twelve hun dred have written him letters, while thirty eight ladies () wish to marry him. Thirty-eight women of fair size remember the Chicago feet ought to net at least five hundred dollars, even when the sausage is soM at wholesale. I.' Lnc tgert sets up his mill again, this editor won't take any Chicago sausage in his'ii." A DELIGHTFUL OCCASION. IN CAMDEN COUNTY. The party which Miss Bessie Ferebee gave her inenas on zsai unlay evening. Nov. 6, was in every way a most enjoyable af fair. The weather was delight ful, and lor those having to drive some distance, it could not have been more so. The young ladies present were Miss Amy Etheridgc, of Wallace ton, Va., most charmingly attired in red silk with ribbons to match, and red crysanthemums ; Miss Mag gie Bell, in black silk and dia mond ornaments ; Miss Mollie Shaw looked' her sweetest in pale blue organdy ; Miss Sudie Cowell was bewitching in wnite organdy, with yellow trimmings; Miss Annie Shaw waa her mer ry little self in an evening waist of white silk and lace ; Miss An nic Boushall looked charming in a silk waist with flowers ; Miss Dillon was interesting in a handsome suit of grey cloth ; Misses Kate and Bertha Harris, both daintily attired in white mull, flowers and ribbons and forget-me-nots, and as merry as could be ; Miss Kate Ferebee, very attractive in bronze silk, with patsemeuterie ornaments ; Miss Bessie Ferebee, the hostess, witty and fascinating, in black organdie over red taffeta silk, ribbons and roses. The young men present were Dr. Cowell, Messrs. Doc Cowell, Chas Morgan and Master Hal Shaw, of Shawboro ; Dr. Saw yer and Mr. Wingate Boushall, of Camden ; Messrs. J. J. Reilly and C. C. Upton, of Wall ace to 11 : Mr. Jordan, of Cornland, and Messrs. Neil, Calvert and John Ferebee, brothers of the hostess. Refreshments were served at half past eleven. The ladies were introduced to their part ners in a very unique manner. On slips of paper were written familiar quotations, such as take back the heart which thou gavest, &c. ; these slips were cut in half, the ladies receiving ( one-half of the quotations and the gentlemen the matches. The many friends of the Wal lace brothers George and John -regretted very much that cir cumstances prevented their com ing. The kindness and geuer ous thoughtfulness of Mrs. Fers ebee will ever be remembered by all the party, especially the young people from Virginia and South Mills, who made their adieus the following afternoon. ".V GOOD TIME." I11 glory Catncleu's moon was shiniug, O cr a scene so gay and brisjiit, For the thoughts were all of pleasure In Miss Bessie's home that uight: Came the boys and girls of Camden, wallacetou and Currituck, South Mills, too, was represented By two fair ones that was luck. For these fair ones Bessie, Maggie, Going all alone, you know, Kindly allowed two young men going lacn to serve one as her beau. After supper, after dressing, And the girls came down once more. Such a scene of fresh, youug beauty Scarce was ever seen before ; For each maiden looked her prettiest, Some were dark and others fair. Some had darkest chestnut tresses, Others sunny, curling hair. Some were tall and regal looking, livery move 01 ease and grace, Others smaller, sweeter, fairer, buple hgure, winning face. Among the variour types of beauty. Coy and winning none the less, Always smiling, always gracious, Came the sweet youug hostess, "Bess" As we name them, do uo fancy This the way they rank in worth. Each one had her way of charming, Witty speeches, ready mirth ; Miss Maggie Ferebee. Miss Annie Boushall, The Misses Shaw, Miss Maeeie Bell. The Misses Harris Kate and Bertha. Their friend, Miss Dillard, too, as well. Miss Bessie Warren. Miss At?v Kthridgc, ' One in white and one in red. Only three more now i left us, A charming trio, though, tis said. Miss Kate Ferebee and Miss Howell, botn 01 music verv loud ; 'Last but not least" is Miss Cowell, Of the purest tvpc of blonde. The boys must not expect a mention, - For we haven't roprji, voa see. We'll only say that they "looked kappv, These fair maiden's beaux to be. There is one whom we've not named yet, Though we've thought of all the while, One with such a stately manner. Still, withall, a kindly smile. She is the young hostess' mother, None will e'er forget, we know, How she helped to show 11s pleasure, All the happy evening through. It was not so long, for Sunday, Coming, made the dancing stop At twelve, refreshments were in order, Then more fun without the '"hop." C. C. U., Camden, N. C. Yellow Jack Killed. Cascarets.
