ASHES rL Seventeen Huildings Destroyed Friday Morning. Advices received from Plymouth says that on Friday morning fourteen stores and warehouses on one side of Water street, ex cept the store of Skittlethorpe & Co., were burned. The cause of the fire is unknown. The large town hall and mar. ket house, Plymouth drrg store and several huildincs west of the town hall were destroyed ; also several buildings on the opposite side of the street. Skittlethorpe and Cooper were damaged by lemoval. The fire must have swept nearly both sides of the street west of Horn thai S: Co's. store, the number of buildings burn' d being about seventeen The town hall, one of the best buildings in the town, was completely destroyed, upon which there was no insurance. This street has been burned out several times, but has had an immunity from fires for the past few years. The total losses will aggre gate over $100,000. Liberates Key West, a Prisoner. April 2 1 This morning at one thiity o'clock, twenty-five soldiers went to the jail and demanded of the Sheriff the release of Sergeant Williams, who had been arrest ed for drunkenness. The sher iff turned Williams over to the crowd, and then appeared before the commanding officer and re. lated the circumstances of the arrest. The officer ordered Wil liams to be rearrested, and to day will endeavor to find out who the men were who liberate ed the prisoner and if successful will couit-marshal them. Spaniards Leaving. New York, April 20. The Ward Line steamer Seneca sailed to-day for Havana with Spaniards who are leaving the country. She also carries food and munitions of war for the Spanish army in Cuba. Powder Building Explodes, Pomptou Lake, N.J. .April 19. A building of the Laflin Rand Powder Company in this city exploded this morning injuring one person. From Cuba Hostilities Will Commence. Washington, April 20. At 10:20 a.m. Judge Day, Assistant Seerctary Adee and ex Secretary of State Foster, were engaged in putting the finishing touches to the ultimatum which will be sent to Spain, today. As soon as it is completed it will be placed in the President's hands. Later At 10:50, Judge Day left the State Department for the Executive Mansion with the note to Spain, ready for the President's signature. The President signed the ul timatum to Spain immediately after signing the joint resolu' tions at 11:4 a. m. The ulti matum was sent to Spam at 11:35 an(l is reported as hav ing reached Madrid All members of the Cabinet were present at the signing of the war resolutions ordering Spain out of Cuba. An ordi nary pen was used. Name was signed in a firm and bold hand. Pen was afterwards given to Secretary Alger as a souvenir. All membeis of the Cabinet shook hands and sat down to discuss emergency measures. The ultimatum sent to Spain quotes the resolutions of Con gress and notifies Spain that her army and navy must leave Cuba and Cubac waters immediately. If Spain does not reply notily ing President McKinley of her intentions to withdraw the troops, hostilities will com mence. The ultimatum gives Spain until Saturday noon to make her reply. The fleet at Key West will blockade Cuba, and the army that is now mobil izing at four points south 'will, with the aid ot a large number of volunteers, be sent to invade the island. Sagasta's speech last night deprived the President of the last hope that there might be peace with honor. Spain will not make any conv cession looking to the avoidance of war. The Spanish Minister to day transferred to the French Ems bassy all official records and ef feels which he cannot take with him. He asked for his pass ports as soon as he saw the ulti matum to Spaiu and will leave to-night for Canada. Toronto is to be his temporary home. Immediately upon receipt of the President's ultimatum, Sendr Polo' sent cablegrams to all the nations apprising them of his contemplated departure tonight. m m m They'll Never Return. Madrid, April 20. The Span ih newspapers to day are very warlike in tone. Crews ot Spanish vessels com posing the Spanish squadron at Cadiz have vowed before the shrine of Virgin Mary to never retnrn unless they are vic torious. Aid For Spain. Paris, France, April 21. A National subscrption fox the aid of Spain was opened here this morning and was promptly sup ported. Vienna, April 20. The Aus trian fleet starts -for Spain im mediately to piotect the Queen. What Weyler Says. Paris April 20. Madrid cor respondent of the "Matin" tel egraphs the report of an inters view with General Weyler in which he says: "Wai will be chiefly a navat one. If the Americans manage to reach Cuba, however, several hundred thousand of them will be neces sary. Fever will kill half of them and we will answer for the rest." Spain Rejects our Ul timatum. Washmgtou D.C., April 21. A cable dispatch in cipher was received at ten o'clock this morning from Minister Wood- ford and was carried direct to the White House by Judge Day It is now being translated; thought to be the official notifi cation of his departure from Madrid today. A cablegram has just been received irom Minister wooas ford in which he says that Spain refuses to recede, and that all diplomatic relations between the united states and Spain are ended. The ultimatum was re ceived in Madrid early this morn ing, and was in the English language. The Spanish Gover nment immediately broke off all "diplomatic relations with the United States and notified the U. S. Minister to that, ef fect before he was able to pre sent any note. Spanish news papers applaud the energy of their Government and enthusN asm of the public at the advent cf war. Captain Sampson's orders have been prepared. Warships are moving for action in Cuba. Porto Rico will be blockaded. The action of war tariffs will be taken up in Congress imme diately. The President this morning hastily gathered around him the leaders in Congress and is anxs ious to begin action. At 11:45 this moining Secre tary Long sent to the White House to recommend to the President that the North Atlant ic squadron be sent to Cuban waters immediately. The Sec retary was urged to make the recommendation by the meins bers of the Strategic board who met immediately after being told that Minister Woodford had been given his passport. Just before the Board adjourn ed further information was re ceived that the Spanish fleet had sailed from Cape Verde Is lands this morning. Congress may declare war momentarily. Committees ot both Houses of Congress are in session discussing the advisabiU ity of making a declaration of war immediately as the Presi dent requests. Senators have advised against the declaration of war. A few of the Congressmen think that hostilities will last over two months. General Lee says that it will not last over two weeks. A special Cabinet meeting was called at x o'elock for the purpose of considering war measures, and is considering the recommendation of the war board relative to intercepting the Spanish fleet. The President will notify the powers that war exists today. A joint resolution will be present ed declaring a state of war exists, and as soon as the act passes the fleets will move at once. The House Foreign Affairs committee are discussing the war situation. The Senate has passed a resolution prohibiting further coal exports. The Senate cuts the time of the National Guard enlistment to one year. The National Guard of the the District of Columbia are as sembled under hurrv orders. Washington, April 21. It is stated on the highest authority thatTtenefal Miles, Senor Palma and the Brigadier General- of Cuba were in consultation yes terday formulating plans for the co-operation of the Cuban and United States forces in Cuba. It is further stated that a messen ger had been dispatched to (Jomez from the United States bearing a proposition from Miles This is the "practical recog nition" of the Cuban republic referred to in his speech in the Senate yesterday afternoon. Washington, April 21., 5 p. m.-The en tire army is moboliz- ing. Spanish officers have been ordered to fight the United States whenever they meet them. The North Atlantic Squadron has been or dered to blockade the Cuban coast immedi- ately. Secretary Alger says Spain's treatment to Minist er Woodford was a declaration of war. Davitt gave notice that he would ask the Secretary of State Chamber lain this afternoon to make coal ing from British color ies a con traband of war. England remains neutral, but will aid the United States if European powers in terfere. Ma- rid, April 20. England's representatives will look after the interests of the United States in Spain. A Call For Volunteers. Washington April 19,5:15 p. in.- -The President has just directed that a call be for 80,000 volunteers. He will allow the Spaniards several days in which to leave Cuba. Spain issued a note to-day in which she says the powers are holding us responsible for the impending war, offering our ul timatum as an appeal Marines Called. Brooklyn, N. Y., April 19.- Orders were received at the Navy Yard this morning calling a battalion of Marines to the Key- West fleet immediately. The marines cheered the news, bes lieving they were to lead land ing 01 uie army invasion, five detachments of marines have ar rived at the Navy Yard for the Cuban battalion. Burns McKinley InEffigy. William F. Cody i:i the event of war with Spain. . Cody, wno is oeiter Known as "i itai Bill," will be placed in charge of the cavalrv scouts who will ac company the States Infantry to Cuba. His command will be made up largely of cowboys from the southern tier of Vet ern States and brute Indian Scouts. THE MAINE EXPLOSION. Spain Says the Ship Was Not Blown Up By a Mine. Madrid, April 18. The report ot the Spanish Hoard of Inquiry on the destiuction of the battle ship Maine has been officially gazetted here. The document treats with the subject at great length, and retracts absolutely that the ship was destroyed by a submarine mine, basing their conclusion upon the absence of various scientific results of such an explosion. The Board finds on the othei hand, upon the evi dence of the divers, other abund ant proof that the explosion which destroyed the Maine was internal. Ordered South. Washington, April 21. Ad- judant-General Corbin has ad vised that every regiment, in fantry, cavalay, light batteries of artilleay be ordered South. Spanish Consulate Closed. New York, April 21.
