It is welcome news to the
American people to learn from
the Navy Department that the
battleship Oregon has completed
'ier long trip and is now safe.
The advantage of the smoke
less powder in confusing the
Americans as to the locality of
the Spanish gunners is stated to
have been one of the notable feat
tires of the battle at Cardenas. The
great soldiers and sailors of the
past, could they take part in the
battles of today, would find that
in order to achieve greatness they
would have to adjust themselves
to conditions that did not obtain
in other days.
The North Carolina Populist
Convention proved, as in many
other instance, that where there
is most noise and bluster there
is the least strength. Congress
man Skinner, who wanted the
party to fuse with the Republic
cans, claimed two-thirds of the
convention, but found himself
beaten out of his boots by Sena
tor Butler when the votes were
counted. The later at this time
favors fusion with the Demo
crats. He had an easy victory.

ANOTHER BIG DAY SALE IN
ELIZABETH CITY.
On Next Thursday May 26th.
Perhaps nothing ever created
as great sensation among the dry
goods stores of Elizabeth City
as that Special Sale given by
Mitchell, who runs the New Bee
Hive Store. Hundreds of peo
pie came for miles, and by 10
o'clock the Bee Hive was packed
and jammed. This sale was the
first and only genuine Special
sale ever given to the people in
this town. Mitchell advertises
just such goods as people need
every day. They are all new
and bought in big quantities for
these Special sales, they are sold
at less than cost and Mitchell
loses considerable money; this is
.10 secret, but he is determined
to make the Bee Hive, Elizabeth
City's greatest store and in this
way brings the people. It is
strictly up to date in everything
mid originates new ideas, strict
their own. A child cau

SAMPSOU
AND SCHLEY
Sent Out to Destroy
The Spanish Fleet
Both American Fleets
Left Key West
This Morning.
The Fleets Are in Splendid
Trim to Pound The
Spaniards.
New York, May 21. The
New York Evening Journal
says they have received inform
ation that Sampson and Schley
left Key West this morning at
daybreak. Schley sailed west
ward toward Yucatan passage,
and Sampson towards the Wind
ward passage, on the eastern end
of Cuba. They have orders to
find Admiral Cervera's fleet and
destroy them. A battle may oc
cur tomorrow morning if Ad
miral Cervera has left Santiago;
otherwise a battle may not ocs
cur before Monday.
Washington, May 21. It is
announced that Sigsby met
Admiral Sampson yesterday aud
delivered a large supply of coal
and ammunition. An official des
patch says the Oregon and Mari
etta are with Sampson. The
Buffalo is heading for Key West
for repairs.
Later It is believed now that
a naval engagement is close at
hand. The New York is the only
ship that returned to Key West
Sampson with the rest of his
fleet is in a good position to
pound the Spaniards, and has
reinforced heavily.
Key West, May 21. It is
known here that Sampson's
plans for the capture and dess
truction of the Spanish fleet is
complete and there is no doubt
felt as to the result. It is now
generally believed that Admiral
Cervera is off the coast of Cuba.
The exact position ef Sampson
cannot be made public, but there
need be no occasion for anxiety
about any of the American
ships. There is much excite
ment here and the general feel
ing is that the expected battle
will be the beginning of the cud
of the war. Naval officers say
that Sampson's plans cannot
fail, and the Spaniards cannot
escape.
