It is welcome news to the American people to learn from the Navy Department that the battleship Oregon has completed 'ier long trip and is now safe. The advantage of the smoke less powder in confusing the Americans as to the locality of the Spanish gunners is stated to have been one of the notable feat tires of the battle at Cardenas. The great soldiers and sailors of the past, could they take part in the battles of today, would find that in order to achieve greatness they would have to adjust themselves to conditions that did not obtain in other days. The North Carolina Populist Convention proved, as in many other instance, that where there is most noise and bluster there is the least strength. Congress man Skinner, who wanted the party to fuse with the Republic cans, claimed two-thirds of the convention, but found himself beaten out of his boots by Sena tor Butler when the votes were counted. The later at this time favors fusion with the Demo crats. He had an easy victory.
