Up to the piesent the Phila
delphia City Hall clock has
cost about $21,000. The motive
power i3 compressed air, and the
visitor to the clock story in the
tall tower is astonished to find
there are no "work" to be seen.
The ponderous hands on the
four dials are operated by meacs
of air under great pressure forc
ed through tubes, and all tour
nairs of hands are controlled by
one little master clock that could
easily -e set on a library mantle
piece.
This little clock, as it ucks
a .1
the- minutes, received bv tele
graph from Washington Obser
vatory, in turn releases the com
pressen air, and over each dial
400 pounds of hands are pushed
forward. The hands are moved
every half minute and the jump
of the minute is six and one
halt inches. The pressure excit
ed is 700 pounds sufficient, it
is said, to drive the hands under
any weather condition.
However, electricity is really
... . I. .
the power which governs tne
workings of the clock, and by
ingenious automatic appliances
it is believed that any lapse by
electricity will be immediately
taken up by the relief motors.
Another peculiarity 01 tne
clock is the absence of figures
on the dials, Broad strips of
bronze taking their place. These
are of uniform width, excepting
those taking the place ot III, VI
IX and XII, which are an inch
wider for sake of convenience,
These strips are 3 feet 2 inches
long and 13 inches broad. Each
hour hand is 9 teet long ana 1
