Wednesday morning sometime between six and ten o'clock the money drawer in the desk of Messrs Brothers & Co. at South Mills was broken open and be tween two and three hundred dollars stolen. Ed. Wooten a young negro man who had been at work at the mill was seen near the office early in the morning and as he had disappeared, sus picion was directed towards him His tracts were followed to this city where he was found about one o clock r. M. in company with another negro, Albert Ever itt. MANTEO ITEMS. Mr. Sheldon Whit&on and his friend, Mr. Jim Price, both of E. City, visited the former's aunt, Mrs. Hooper, last week. The infant child of Mr. and Mrs Charlie Blivin of E. City died at the home of Mr. George Blivin, on Fuday. Mr. A. S. Mann left Saturday for his new home in E. City. Sorry to have to give him up, but wish him much success there. Miss Allie Wescott returned home last week, and will take charge of her sister's Mrs. St. Clair Pugh of Wanchese, milli nery department, the coming season. Miss Allie served the ast season in Penn. Mr. S. A. Evans made a short trip to Englehard, Hyde county, last week. There seems to be a centre of attraction there. Miss Mary Coffield returned o her home in Cisco, last week fter a pleasant stay with her tint, Mrs. R. C. Evans. Captain John T. Daniels, Sr. moved Monday to the new build ing on First St., lecently finish ed, owned by Mr. Midgett of Chicamicomico. Mr. Henry B. Ward caught seven thousand mullets at Oregon Inlet, last week. m - v- y 1 Mr. o. Lray is engaged in the mercantile business at Skyco The infant child of Mr. and Mrs Frank Midgett, died last week. On last Thursday evening as we were returning home an old lady boarded the train at Greens boro, who was very much dis tressed. She had lost her pocket book, containing ail her money, railroad ticket, trunk check, and was in a distressing situation. She claimed to be from Raleigh and had been up to Asheville to visit Jier relatives. The conduc tor passed her, on condition that she pay her fare after she got to Raleigh. This old lady told us in a distressed tone of voice that this was hei second trip on the train and each time she lest her ticket and that she did not intend to get on another train as long as she lived. Rollins, took place last week at the Senators mountain home, near Marshall. Chas. E. Turner, one of Dur hams most brilliant young attor neys and a sterling Democrat, died last week at Wilkesboro. Col. W. T. Dortch, of Golds boro, is a candidate to succeed Ed. W. Pou as Solicitor for the Fourth District. Ike Jones, a negro lineman, fell from a telegraph pole at Charlotte Monday and was killed. At Greensboro, while a livery man was unloading horses from car, a man named Trotter struck a horse with a switch. The horse kicked him in the abdomend, and after hours of terrible agony he died. Archie Kinsauls, the murder er who was to have been hung at Clinton on the 6th and at tempted suicide by cutting his throat, has been respited until the 28th. Two boys who went from Goldsboro to enter school at the Virginia Military Institute at Lexington, Va., were so severely hazed that their parents took them home. W. H. Mizell, of Pitt county, whose wife died under such sus picious circumstauces recently as to indicate poisoning, has been committed to jail to await the action of the grand jury. Miss bailie K. Stevens, of Goldsboro, a young iady prom inent in the work of the Wo mans Christian Temperance Un ion, and who several times ap peared before the State 1 ress Eating and Sleeping.
