The Associated Press dira'ches from Baltimore to the Virginian, of yesterday, stat that one death and two other cases of yellow fever ar? in that citv. SOUND MONEY. If it be asked what is sound money, one reply would be, re murks the Philadelphia Ledger, money which does not depend for its exchangeable value upon the stamp of Government, and is there fore full, if not equal, value in all parts of the world.' The only money that answers this descrip tion is gold coin. Nor can any thing else be substituted for it by the action of any one Government, if at all. By gold coin all other kinds of moneymust be measured. It is because our silver and, our notes circulating freely in this country are exchangeable for gold that they are maintained at par. Open the mints to the free coin age of 50 cents worth of silver, in to a coin nominally termed a'dol lar, and gold will disappear from our Mirrpiiov thp Rilvpr dollar will no longer be exchangeable tor gold, and will no longer, buy as much of anything as a gold dollar. So sen sitive is the currency of a country to differences of value between two kinds of coin, that a difference of 1 or 2 per cent, is sufficient to drive the coin higher value out of circulation. The advocates of free coinage of silver At, 1fi tn 1 nssnmp nnnnrpntlv . . ... . r r , that tlere is some special virtue in this ratio. The fact of the matter, as shown by the history of coinage, is that this ratio was adopted at a time when it was supposed to rep resent the lelative value of the two metals. Various ratios were tried, 15, 15J and16, but they could never be so nicely adiusted as to maintain for any length of time the parity of value which was sought. The purpose, however, was always to make the ratio fit existing market conditions. The rational advocate of silver coinage should, therefore, advocate a ratio of something like 30 or 32 to 1, instead of his favorite 16 to 1. But this would not suit the own ers of silver mines, who, irrespect ive of its ruinous effect upon the country, desire that each fifty cents' worth of silver they control shall be so stamped that they may be able to pass it upon their fel-low-countrvnien for a dollar. The thinking masses of the country will soon see this. Virginian. .AVIXFALL ITEMS. Miss Lucy Twine, one of our fairest maidens, is visiting relatives in Windsor.
