Statistics show that the.Uuit ed States has only grown about one-fpurth of the rice she con. sumes, and of last years, barely one-eight. One reason is that this crop can only be grown in a small portion of about four States, to wit. North Carol ina, South Carolina, Georgia and Louisiana. In the second place, the low import duty on rice for many j:ears past made it easy for China, Japan and other ricegrowing countries to invade our markets and sell the article at such low prices as to make it uu- profiatble for our farmers to com plete with them. Now the eondU t ions are changed. Our last Con gress put a duty equal to thirty- tour cents per bushel on rough rice. This, with the freight charges from foreign coutries, will give our planters a protection equeal to fifty cents per bushel, and just as long as this duty remains in force our rice planters may gather a rich harvest. Good upland rice was readily selling at ninety cents per bushel this season, while lowland riec sold as high as $1.30 per bushel. The secretary of the Caro lana Rice Mills in this city inform us that they bought the rice crop of four farmers living on the Cape Fear river for which they paid, in the aggregate the sum of $30,500. One planter in Wayne counly sold his crop, grown on about forty acres, for $1800, and several others in this county realized for $50 per acre. Aside form these sums real ized, rice straw is selling at $8 per ton, and reckoning two tons per acre is a moderate estimate. The average acre of rice planted should realize $50 to 60."
