With the small amount of saleable timber that is left in the county one | would think that every safeguard would be taken by everyone, that fire-bugs (and careless people should be classed as such) would be given treatment that would cause them to be more careful next time, and that fellows who persist in set ting fire to woodlands which they do; not own would be run out of the county. Li k out on the lulls in any <urec-i tion and note the bleak, cold, raw, j ugly scone where fire has done its ^ wrist. Then look upon the side of: a beautiful mountain where care has ( been taken of the young timber, even j though the saleable stuff has been cut out and marketed, and then im-i agine the difference a visitor who; comes here for his first time would notice. Fere-is, that is beautiful forests,1 growing alongside and over the1 mountain streams that we are so greatly blessed with constitute our biggest asset, and should bo guarded zealously by these who have the best interests i f the county at heart. /S I in MAIL .1 X ECESSITY? With all the agitation about graft by private companies, inexperience and resultant death of army pilots who attempted to take over the work when the president turned all con tracts down, and the final schedule which is only a skeletonized air mail. service, one wonders if after all the air ■ iSTW^pf^rccefsity. With telephone and telegraph go ing into every part of the globe, I with the fast trains that are now operating in every section and the quick service to be afforded by reg ular mail facilities why keep on ^ killing and maiming? AND WE DON’T EVEN HAVE ANY 1 Reports from Florida and other ^ resort centers to the effect that busi- j ness is booming in the line that j Transylvania county must glean a large part of its “cash crop” from .with Asheville and Henderson ville sending good-will tours and thousands of pieces of publicity into the sections- from which we hope to get our tourists from, these towns working through their chambers of commerce for the benefit of all.... Brevard sits high, dry and mighty without any semblance of an organi zation . --— Ami here’s another headline.... “Insurance on the upturn”-Won der if he didn’t mean rates? “Mae West acclaimed as an angel” ... .newspaper headline... .mebbe so, mebbe so. Who will we go te war with next? asks a newspaper headline... .We move that we have no more wars until the last one is paid for. Now that’s something interesting and MIGHT be applicable to Brevard with good results — Canton and Waynesville have curfew laws which are destined to keep kids under six teen years of age off the streets after the sun has set one hour. We’ve seen '«»m under sixteen and still uptown in Brevard until an hour before sun rise. Any candidate who wants to know the real reason why we absolutely refuse to accept political advertising “on a credit” will be given privilege of seeing our political page in the ledger of 1931—lot of entries on the left hand side and few on the right. Farmers who wish to help them selves and their fellows by reducing their corn acreage or their number of hogs for 1934 would do well to see either Professor Julian Glazener or Professor Randall Lyday. This corn-hog reduction plan is not a skin-game, but something that is be ing dene by the federal government that will help raise the price of corn and hogs and' pay the farmer for helping himself., n i Two fellows started a row in front < f the jail t’other night. We call that h ust a plain case of bad judgment. * __H *■ WHO IS TO BLAME \ - < (The Charlotte Observer) Senator Reynolds grows rath<r j crvid in hi- regrets that the people * if North Carolina are not coming in . or their full and proper share of the ; lencfits flowing from the Home Own- i rs Loan Corporation. The burden of his remarks falls ;he heavier upon the office of the jtate administration, at least by in- , lirection and implication. , He simply says that there is some- i hirg wrong about the way the •, igeney is functioning in this State »nd he is earnest in his plans to see ;hat whatever the monkey-wrench nay be, it will be thrown out of the machinery. The Senator should complete his investigation, if he has started any, in order to find out exactly just where the trouble is. There are some obstacles in the way of State administration—et least conceivable obstacles—which would not be removed no matter what sort of man may be put in control of this important office. Perhaps the diincuity is not in urn administration ’ht all, but in the cir cumstance that the mortgage-holders won’t take the bonds of the Govern ment in exchange for their first liens. That, at least, could be a" very I rrnconable and reliance explanation: for the improper or partial function ing of this office. The Senator would be contributing a service were he to ascertain if this is the case or not. If it is, whether there is one ad ministration or a dozen, whether Mr.! O’Neal is at the head of the business ■ or the most vigorous and alert ex- J reutive anywhere to he found in the; land, the office would bo desultory in it1' efforts and the service could not be given. Reid was on the sick list last week but we are glad to re port she is better. We were indeed sorry it became necessary to lay off some of the reedy women from the sewing room here. We wonder what Mrs. O’Ber ry would say if she knew a widow woman without any income was laid oft while women who have big husky husbands to work for them are al-1 lowed to hold their jobs. That is excatly what has happened to Oak land sewing room. Being a widow myself I know how to sympathise. We were glad to see the increase in attendance at Sunday school Sun day and hope to see the interest con-., tinue. Next Sunday is our regular preaching day. Let’s give our pastor a large congregation. In Memory Of W. W. It seems that in moving1 the Glenville stock back to Brevard a keg of powder which had been opened got scattered about the floor. Fire got among it somehow and an explosion followed. Several were slightly burned, among whom are Clyde Duckworth and Miss Sonora] Robinson, and Jas. Walters was severey burned. The front windows were blown out into the street and some slight damage to the stock of goods will result. It might have been worse. A party rode last week over one of the routes which it is expected I will be utilized in constructing the' r.ew road to Sapphire. The routej taken by the party was the line of, low gaps adjacent to the lime vein. They found the roads in a miserable condition and had several experiences trying to pass people enroute, mak-, ing the 20 miles of mud in eight hours. It is now thought that the road can he built on a 5 percent grade with $2,000, and the Toxa way company will subscribe $1,000. We cannot afford to permit the company to make an outlet to Wal halla or any other point, and there should he no hesitation in taking the remainder of the necessary stock. The Toxaway road is only one of the many needed, but it is an im portant one if we would remain the nutet for that attractive section. At The TIMES OFFICE NOTI TO PROPERTY OWNERS E. Gaston Whitmire has been duly appointed County Supervisor of Taxation and will soon appoint the Tax Listers for the various townships in the Coun ty and he will advertise the place and time v/here the property owners in the several townships can list their property for taxation. A great many property owners have failed to list their property in the past and it costs the County a large sum each year to search the records and make out accurate lists. Under the provisions of law, the property owner is required to list his taxes with the tax lister during the period fixed by law for such listing and if the property owner fails, neglects or refuses to so list his property, he is liable to indictment. Therefore, in order to have a true and correct tax list of all the property in the County, the County Appraisor of Taxation will have to proceed by law against each and every taxpayer who fails or neg lects to list his property during the time provided for same. Notice will be given by advertisement in the Transylvania Times and also by notices posted at several places in each Township when and where the Tax Lister can be found by the property owner, and all citizens are now notified that they are expected to meet said Tax Lister and list their property and thereby save themselves from additional cost of legal action against them. Respectfully, " d of Commissioners, of Transylvania County
