We commend the honest and loyal service these men have rendered Transylvania county. We deplore the fact that the wives | and families of these men are being | forced to endure great suffering on account of the unjust punishment placed upon them and pledge to them our cooperation in their efforts to carry on under these trying circum stances, and commend them for going forward under the full knowledge that the men are innocent and have not lost any of the confidence and re spect of the citizens of Transylvania county. The records of the county commis sioners of Transylvania county re veal that in compliance with an order of Judge Townsend made at the December Term 1932, of the superior Court of Transylvania, these men did on December 24, 1932, pay into the board of county commissioners or Transylvania county the sum of thirty-two thousand dollars, which fund' have remained with the county commissioners since that date and are still in the possession of the county of Transylvania and these men are being compelled to suffer the penaltv of both fine and impris onment when the Supreme court of North Carolina in this case ueciaieu that it was contrary to law. and in addition thereto, two judges of the Sv.prt me Court of North C arolina have declared in written opinion that there was no evidence of any crime | living been committed by these men. | We deplore the fact that innocent) men in North Carolina may be re-1 (|uired to suffer such unusual and) unjust punishment and are required' i,>‘serve a sentence in the state pris-. in after having paid a fine in the, same eau-e. . 1 ewis P. As we understand it, the NRA is not merely to tide us over an emerg ency but to see that these emergen cies do not recur. While our national government is providing inconceiv able sums of money for AAA, CCC PWA, CWA, TVA and others, it should provide at least $400,000,000 from the federal treasury to be dis bursed through state departments of education in order to meet the pres ent emergency need and rescue the schools from imminent breakdown Our great need at present, as all unprejudiced, impartial, patriotic ob servers fully realize, is a more ef fective system of education “made to click with life,” evenly distributed, professionally administered, ade quately supported, keenly sensitive to its responsibility, and in touch with present social needs. Education and national welfare are so interde pendent that one is inconceivable without the other. T. C. HENDERSON. Lake Toxaway.
