INTEREST RATE CUT I
BY! INSmUTION
• ■ t
T. L. Gwyn, secretary-treasurer of
the Asheville Production. Credit Asso
ciation has just received word from
Governor W. I. Myers of the Farm
Credit Administration in Washing
ton, D. C., that the interest rale on
new loans from production credit as
sociations has been reduced from
6 1-2 to 5 per cent.
According to Mr. Gwyn the new 5
per cent interest rate becomes effect
ive immediately on all new loans and
advances made by the association and
will be applicable until further notice.
“The new interest rate of 5 per cent
will not affect loans already advanced
in full,’’ Mr. Gwyn said. “These will
continue to bear the rate of interest
prevailing at the time the loan was
closed. The interest charges on loans
from the association are collected
when the loans mature. The Ashe
ville Production Credit association is
now making loans on acceptable crop
and chatteKsecurity to farmers in
Buncombe, Haywood, Transylvania,
Madison and Henderson counties.
“The reduction of the interest to
5 per cent on new loans,” Mr. Gwyn
continued, “is made possible by a re
cent sale of federal intermediate
credit bank debentures to investors at
an unusually low rate of interest. The
association gets money to lend farm
ers from the federal intermediate
credit bank of Columbia, S. C.
“The lowering of the interest rate
on new loans to 5 per cent is the
second reduction in two months, the
rate having been reduced from 6 to
5 1-2 per cent on March 16.
“According to Governor Myers,"
said Mr. Gwyn, "the federal interme
diate credit bank is passing on imme
diately to farmer-borrowers from
production credit associations the sav
ing made possible by lower cost of
getting money. The confidence of in
vestors in the security of the inter
mediate credit banks has been such
“that tfce-ba&s are able.t0 £et. mon®y
to lend at the lowest discount rate in
their history. Governor Myers says
that the resulting low rate or interest
on production credit association loans
is enabling farmer-borrowers to save
thousands of dollars on the cost of
their farming this year. If the asso
ciations make sound loans, and loans
that are collectible, an adequate sup
ply of low cost money will continue
to be available.”

BANGHART GIVEN 36 >
YEARS IN U.S. PRISON
Spent Severn! Month* in Tran
sylvania County—Member
of Nationwide Gang
Basil (The Owl) Banghart and
Ludwig (Dutch) Schmidt v/ere con
victed in Federal Court in Asheville
last Thursday on all twelve counts
of indictment charging them with
participation in the $105,000 mail rob
bery in Charlotte last November.
Schmidt received 32 years while
Banghart |drew a Sentence Vof 36
years.
3anghart, already serving & sen
tence of 99 years for participation
in the kidnaping of John Factor of
Chicago, did not need to be tried to
get sentence enough to last him for
life but this sentence was to make
sure that he could not be paroled or
pardoned.
The trial lasted only about seven
hours, one of the shortest trials of
its kind in history.
During the trial- Banghart was
identified by Sheriff John R. Craig
of Pickens as one of the two bandits
who robbed the pickens bank of $25,
000 in 1931.
nangnari was reared in the moun
tain section north of Pickens, being a
hard working, honest mountain boy,
but grew tired of this life and wont
to Chicago and there cast his lot with
gangsters.
While serving a sentence in At
lanta along with Robert McGill of
Greenville, who was identified as one
of the participants in the Pickane
robbery and “Bunk” Hendrix also of
near Greenville it was thought that
the bank robbery was plotted. After
Banghart bad completed! his sen
tence in Atlanta he came to live at
the home of Hendrix in Upper Eaat
Fork, close to the North-South Caro
liaa^fa^jjbiiethere he imported
trucks. The |
w, the bank
TCtoery and making his escape, but
the use of the trucks was not known,
but it was thought that they had
planned to transport liquor on a larger
scale.
After the robbery officers traced
the robbers to the home of Hendrix,
but were only a few minutes too late.
Hendrix told the officers that the
men had been there and had juat
left. Officers then had no more clews
to follow and no more waa heard of
them until the arrest of Banghart in
Baltimore last February and waa
identified as the Pickens robber.
Banghart probably will be tried for
the robbery if he but lives the sen
tence of 13d years.
