ASHEVILLE TO W l JULY FOURTH El NT ASHEVILLE, June ft—Under the auspices of Welcome to Asheville, Inc., all of Western North Carolina has been invited to participate in an old fashioned celebration at the Asheville Memorial S ta d ium on July Fourth. Harking back to the events appre ciated by the grandfathers of the present generation the directors in ■barge are striving to make the event old fashioned in every particular. The affair will be an all day one, starting in (the inferring .with a patriotic parade followed by a speech to be delivered by an orator well known throughout the entire moun tain region. In the afternoon there will be a succession of games of the eighties, catching the greased pig; climbing the greased pole; obstacle races and many other mirth provok ing events that demand skill and speed. Visitors to the celebration will be asked to bring their luribhe; and make an all day picnic of the affair. A baseball game at the Asheville ball park and a large dance at night will also be included in the festivi ties. Quintuplets Arc Improving North Bay, Ont.—The five daugh ters, world-famous quintuplets, born two weeks ago to Mr. and Mrs. Oliva Dionne, are all improving, following a fighting chance for life. The signs of jaundice which appeared the first of the week have nlmost entirely cleared up. To Stay Out Of Cuban Affairs Washington—The United States Friday fully relinquished the right to interfere in the affair of Cuba Fii dav by senate ratification of the new treaty of political relations with the island republic. To Kilt Cattle In Drouth Area Kanss City, Mo.—A blazing sun mocked the water-hungry wheat lands Friday condemning a million cattle to premature slaughter and burning down another million bushels of wheat. Temperatures that hit 106 degrees doomed the cattle. The government announced they would be slaughter ed to relieve farmers in Minnesota, the Dakotas and Texas where feed shortages prevail. Girls Give Up Dillinger Hunt Atlanta, Ga.— Two 20-year-old girls. Bobbv Luttrell and Gene Bur gess, of Bedford, Ind., gave up then search for the big bad man, John Dillinger, Friday and promised to go home. Main St. Phone 69 Film Actor DUs Hollywood—Lew Cody, film actor and husband of the late Mabel N'or nand, was found dead in Ids home Friday. Death was apparently due in a heart attack. The body was found in 3 bedroom on the second floor of, the palatial residence by the butler and Lee Wester man, Cody’s masseur. Cody was clad in pajamas and was ly.ng apparently peacefully sleeping. The butler summoned police, who vritn the police surgeon arrived a few minutes after the discovery of the body. “We didn't think there was any thing wrong for a Eecond,’ the butler said; “and then wc realized he had passed away.” Huye Balloon Ready To Seek Altitude Mark Akron, Ohio-The world's largest free balloon — n which two daring army officers soon will attempt an ascent to the greatest altitude ever reached by nian-was pronounced completed .by the builders Friday. I Aged Man Buried Alive By Request j India—An aged abbot near Bareilly has been buried alive at his own re quest. The abbot reputed to be 157 years old, believed his life's work was over. Pilgrims reported he lay down in a grave and that faithful follow ers, after performing ancient cere monies, covered him with earth. I _ June Robles To Enter Movies Long Beach—June Robles .the six year old little girl who was kidnaped ! and imprisoned for 19 days has ! been offered through her father, Fer nando Robles, a contract to become a vaudeville trouper or a movie act ress. The contract calls for little June’s appearance for four weeks at | >1,000 per week. Robles says he plans ’ to accept one of the offers and take j >1,500 of the proceeds and set it aside as a reward for the capture of the kidnapers. Masters had his gun in his hand who" he came up, Mr. Powell testified, ano when asked about the shooting, said “I had to do it for he was coming a me witn an axe. Masters asKcu mm to go after the sheriff, Mr. Power said. Roper was lying about 35 yard: from the Masters home when he fits' saw him, witness said. Sheriff Tom Wood testified of go ing to the Masters home and finding Roper lying on the edge of th r. ;«d with an axe lying by his side. Sheriff Wood said that Masters told him that Roper was advancing on him with an axe, and that he told him to stop; Roper did not stop and he shot him, The man was shot in the chest Sheriff Wood said. The court room was two-thirds full of spectators, Happy Collins, Wood Paxton, Kay Collins, Oliver Gallo way, Babe Stroup and Abe Whitmire serving as coroner’s jury. Roper lived in Transylvania coun ty for four or five years, working in the East Fork section. He was unmar ried. The body was brought to the Kilpatrick Funeral home Friday night and carried to Pickens county Saturday morning. Funeral service? were held from Oolenoy Baptist church Sunday morning, with burial in the church cemetery.
