PRISON CAMP WORK ORDER IS HELD UP - (Continued From Page One) river and have the storage reservoirs built on the streams flowing into the French Broad river. This would mean much to the county, if this could be done, because a power dam would necessitate the maintenance of a constant level in the lakes and would also give the opportunity for the organization and operation of in dustries to utilize the power so gen erated. As the writer is informed, it is the purpose of the government to generate electricity and then to pro vide means by way of loans to indus tries to utilize the power at the place where it is generated. This would mean that if these power dams were built in Henderson and Transylvania counties, that there would immedi ately spring up near and around said dams thriving industrial operations which would give employment to many citizens of both counties. The impounding of flood waters in the tributary streams and up in the mountains would not depreciate the value of the lands adjacent thereto. For instance, and applying to Tran sylvania county alone ,if a dam were built at Enon Shoals, another one below the mouth of Davidson River at Clarkson Hill, another one at Wilson Bridge, it would mean three power dams in Transylvania county which would develop several thousand horse power each and the upper waters of the French Broad could be impounded to maintain a constant level in the upper lake which when it .was util ized, would maintain a constant level in the second lake and when the water in the second lake was used and passed through its turbines or other equipment, would produce a constant ievel in the third lake with out causing, a downdraw on either of the three lakes, and thereby prevent damage caused by mud banks as w uld occur in a storage reservoir. The various private corporations in this state and in South Carolina have found it advantageous to build sev eral dams on the same stream and utilize the water fvom the upper dam in maintaining the water in the dams below same, and the government could well follow the example and exper ience of these private corporations in this type of work. The storage dams on the small tri butary streams would do but little damage because where the water would be stored the banks would be so precipitous that a draw-off of ten or twenty feet would mean but small exposure of the banks of the storage reservoir and practically no mud banks whatsoever. m Transylvania county is especially rich in certain mineral deposits which -hoitld he developed to-wit, iron, lime and manganese veins in work able quantities, and the only thing necessary to make us a great steel producing section has been coal, which, owing to our geological forma tion ,we have never found here and States was claiming for itself the title of “leader in peace, it was ac tually the leader in the move for more war." . “The- present appropriation for armament totals $700,000,000.00 with another ?1,000,000.000 just added by the vicious and defenseless Vinson bill, and hundreds of millions stolen from the public Works fund% he went on . . . . “Yet we call th>s getting hack to normalcy.” Sever. Pen<h In Wreck Pebiktce, N\ Y.—The charred wreckage of a New York to Chicago “luxury liner,” with the bodies of its seven occupants nearby, was found Monday smashed against the almost inaccessible slope oi Last Chance hill, a 2000-foot peas in the lower Catskills. The development of electric cur- ^ rent by the government in quantities I and at a cost which would enable in-1 vestors to develop our iron, mangan-I ese and lime proposition would et. 1 able us to use the natural resource' of Transylvania county to employ Transylvania labor and to build up our county to an extent never here tofore dreamed of. Our forests will soon be denuded ol their products. The bark acid wood and saw timber will be used up *and we cannot rely after that on any thing but our tourists, with the ex ception of our very limited agricul tural resources. We cannot hope to be classed as an agricultural county, because of the uncertainty of the flood situation in iour river bottoms, and those who own [bottom lands and adjoining hili lands can sell their bottom lands to the government and then sell their beau tiful cottage and villa sites adjoin ing any lake built bv the government ! at a price that will more than pay |th"m for their present holdings. : This is a matter which should be 'attended to at. once, because the Ifederal government has stopped work 'on the highways in this section for [the reason that they have not deter mined where the lake or lakes will he located and it is necessary for the welfare of Transylvania county and for those who do not own lands in or adjoining any lakes the government mav build (for those people will be taken oare of as well as other property owners) that county commissioners and the boards of aldermen of Bre vard and Rosman take immediate action to have the claims of Transyl vania county officially presented to the proper TV A authorities before it is too late. The writer has had a conference with Dr. Morgan, the head of the TV A and has found him to be a most reasonable man. but some concerted action should be taken and taken im mediately to protect the interest- of our county.
