The many friends of County .Phy sician I. A. Harris of Jupiter will be glad to learn that he is steadily re covering from a stroke of paralysis from which he has been suffering for seven weeks, and was able to come to town today. Our information regarding the closing up of the DeVane well, as published last week, was at fault in some particulars, and it gives us pleasure to set the matter right. Notice had been given to those inter ested that the well would be ci»sed on a certain day; warnings against trespassing had been posted and no advantage was taken of the absence of any one. We are always hungry for news but in our eagerness to get it we do not wish to go beyond the truth, and according to our pres ent information we owe this explana tion to Mr. DeVane. M. D. Cooper, our veteran livery man, is still young enough to get bag gage to the depot in true city style. A forgotten trunk yesterday morning gave him an opportunity to show his ability in this line. The commissioners on Monday ordered a road from Hiram Kings in the Pink Bed valley to the top of the Pisgah ridge. This opens the way for Haywood county to take similar action and thus build one ol the most attractive drives in this sec tion. We have received a communica tion on this road question which we will publish in the near future. .The following were appointed list takers for the several townships by the commissioners on Monday: W. H. Grogan, Brevard; P. P. Orr, Boyd; W. K. Moore, Catheys Creek; W. P. Hogsed, Dunns Rock; L. M. Glazener. Eastatoe; G. C. Galloway, Hogback; W. E. Hall, Gloucester; H. P. Nichol son, Little River. Mr. Everett, of the Lowndes place, is expeetted here by the 10th. He will probably remain some weeks .among j his workmen to direct improvements . on his property. Main Street Phone 123 Brevard — North Carolina DR. MARR HEARD AT CIVIC CLUB MEETING Speaking before the Women’s Civic club Monday afternoon at the regular meeting of this organization, Or. T. F. Marr in a forceful address gave many worth while suggestions con cerning women’s pari in the promotion of bitter conditions locally and other wise. “No artificial stimulant can ever cure the present day evils,” Dr. Marr said. He pointed out the necessity of getting back to :he fundamental and essential foundation of living before better conditions locally and else where could prevail, and of the im portance of instilling into the minds of the youth of today such fundamen tal traits as honesty, good character and faith. Dr. Marr stressed the fact man, Mrs. John Maxwell, for the flower show and committees were named for the various activities con nected with the event. Location for the show had not been definitely de-1 cided but will be announced at an: early date, several places being under ! consideration. Reports were given by the treas-j urer, Mrs. Roy Long, and by Miss Katherine Griffin, chairman of the Woman’s Exchange, reporting that 27 members were already enrolled in the exchange in the two weeks since its opening. that mere training is not the only re quisite for right living but of greater ; .Wf —~-'-^ importance is the maintaining of a proper atmosphere in which one i» daily surrounded, and of the vain able part women are privileged to have in bringing about better condi tions in the present recovery pro gram. Following the program, which was -*--HU in charge of the Americas Citiioa shlp committee of which Mm. Oliver Orr is chairman, a discussion was held concerning the flower show which will be an event of July 27.
