Reece were married on Sunday last,
at the residence of E. P. Galloway of
the Carson’s Creek section, Squire
W. H. Aiken officiating.
In case of a war with Spain, the
fact that the transportation of Amer
ican products is largely done in for
eign vessels is an element of strength
which is generally overlooked. The
United States is only second to Great
Britain in the number of its private
merchantmen. In the flurry caused
by the preparations for war it will
not do to overlook the demands of
civil government. A war with Spain
wilt be a Email matter, a kind of
“two for a nickel’' affair, but it will
be taken advantage of by every fel
low with a job, to slip that job
through congress. The money power
and trusts will strive to still further
oppress the people and must be
watched
There’s a new whistle on the K. Si
B. Railroad and it is attached to a
new engine. It is evident that the
present management is determined to
give our county a good service dur
ing the coming ;eason. • A double
daily schedule will be put on next
Sunday.
Mrs. T. J. Neely accompanied her
son J. W. Neely to Asheville on Tues
day. Jim had been visiting in Bre
vard a few days.
J. L. Smith and Corrie Davis of
Balsam Grove were married on Sun

King’s Creek got on a boom during
; the thunder storm Wednesday and
j played havoc with the • Chattanooga
I Lumber company. The mill recently
j located above Floyd Wood's’ place was
twisted out of ail semblance of a. well
regulated sawmill and it is thought
thst it will take a week to get it In
j operation again.
The closing exercises of tiie Bre
vard Epworth school wiil be held on

president of the baord of trustees, .
made a partial canvass of our town 1
here in April and some $800 in
pledges of money, material and labor 1
have been secured toward the erection j
of suitable buildings this summer ami ]
! fall on the very desirable plot ot i
[ ground purchased by the trustees last 1
! year. The managers hope tc reach the j
! $1,000 mark here when ail have |
1 been seen. They trust those gentle- |
men who have not been interviewed
will not feel at all slighted as ft is
the intention to give every one a
chauce to subscribe. Dr. Atkins and
the principal will attend th? Epwovth
League Sunday school conference at
Salisbury on May 20, where the mat
ter of the buildings will be presented.
The Pickens railroad seems to be
an unlucky investment—at least it
starts off with a piece of bad luck.
On Friday morning the road was
accepted by the commissioners and
bonds of the county were signed by
E F. Looper. On Saturday the train
jumped the track and the engine and
pas-engor car went over a IO-fooc
embankment. The Sentinel says:
“Spikes had been placed in the rad
: and were seen by several of the pas
sengers but it was all done so quick
that no one could communicate with
the engineer. Several theories are
afloat as to the cause of the accident,
but the general opinion is that the
spikes were laid along the iron by
some children who did not l'--alize that
an accident would occur. The ten
der and especially the coach will have
to go to the shops to be worked over.
There will probably be no schedule
aranged or trains run until these
cars come back from the snop.”'No
one was dangerously hurt, but we are
sorry that our neighbors have had
the experience of an accident.
