EROSION SURVEY REPORT IS MADE HIGH POINT, September 26-—A survey to determine the extent and severity of erosion and jrenerul land condition in 10 we tern North Caro lina counties has just been completed by W. D. Lee, soil specialist of the soil erosion service of the department of the interior. ■ 3K • -«' v . /~4k-9R|K* The report indicates that erosion in these counties is worse than was ex pected, Mr. Lee stated. Out of a total I area of upwards of 2,800,000 acres. ; about 215,000 acres are reported very j seriously eroded with gul.r.s and an I additional 210,000 acres of formerly productive land are abandoned due i to excessive erosion. Around 60,000 acres in Buncomoe county are severely eroded with deep gullies; Haywood county is second with 35,000 acres and Macon county third with 25,000 acre?. Buncombe county also leads in area of land abandoned, having 28, 000 acres of untenable land. Jackson county* follows Buncombe with 17,500 acres and Cherokee county comes , third with 16,385 acres abandoned. The survey is a part of a state wide survey being made to determine the genera! land condition in North Carolina. A sim'lar study la being made in every state by the depart- j ment of the interior and on comple tion a report will be prepared for | presentation to congress this wint.r. j In addition to the severity of ero sion and wasteland the report brings out areas of cultivated, idie tillable, open pasture and forest land and top ography, according to Dr. J. H. Stallings, Regional director j*f the soil erosion service. The 10 mountain counties included in this report are Macon, Buncombe, Transylvania. Clay, Swain. Jackson. Hinders, ti, Cherokee, Graham and Haywood. The report of W. D. Lee, soil specialist of the soil erosion service of the department, of the interior shows that a large amount of land in Transylvania county has been lost because of excessive erosion, i Out of a total area in the county of 238,272 acres, mostly in forest land 9,800 acres are reported ser iously eroded and 12.300 acres aban doned, 3,878 acres are less severely eroded and 8,000 acres are eroded 1 only to a slight degree. The section I most damaged is the French Broad 1 valley from Kosman to the Hendcr • son county line.
