Is Practically Same As Pullman

Sleep is pretty much the same any
where one takes it. Whether it be
done nodding at a desk on a warm
afternoon or flying up near the stars
in an airplane is up to the individual,
and I did both last Saturday.
One tries to sleep sometime and
cannot, or tries not to and does,
or does it without thinking anything
about it. Personally, I’ve never had
much trouble sleeping, either sitting
or lying. I’ve slept every way except
standing, and I guess there are few
who have, at least with anv success.
Sot So Limited.
My experience as a sleeper had,
until last week, been limited to cribs,
cots, beds, hammocks, barber chairs,
Pullman berths, and, once, a billiard
table. Last week I added an airplane
berth—through the new sieeper serv
ice of the American Airlines over its
southern transcontinental route be
tween New York and Los Angeles via
Memphis.
And I really slept — from Fort
Worth almost to Phoenix going
out, and from Los Angeles to Fort
Worth coming back — and so soundly
that I had to be awakened for break
fast. I woke up twice during the
night going out, but through no
fault of the airlines. It can’t do
anything about the temperature be
ing 60 at 7,500 feet and 90 on the
ground—although they are going to
try.
To get around That annoyance
when coming down to earth where
blankets are not needed from the
cold upper air where they are, and
waking some of the passengers up,
American Airlines plan to install
cooling plants at each stop. They
will hook it up with the plane and
send a stream of cold air through it.
Passengers can sleep all the way
then. The landings and takeoffs are
<o smooth that they rarely wake any
one.
The super-conuor sleepers uie
insulated that the roar of the ship’s
two motors, either of which is capa
ble of sustaining the plane in flight,
is muted until passengers may con
verge in an ordinary tone and cotton
stops ure affectation.
Hit 180 Miles
The planes fly at 100 miles an
hour, and have a top speed of 180.
The landing spied is as low as 55.
Memphians are not much farther
from the west coast by air now than
they are from Little Rock or Nash
ville by motor and the trip is not
nearly as tiring.
The 16-passenger Condor d a y
plane from New York leaves Mem
phis at 6:07 o’clock one night and, the
next morning at 7:55 lands in1 Los
Angeles. On the return trip it leaves
Los Angeles at 7:30 at night and
reaches Memphis at noon the next
day.
Passengers change in Fort Worth
to the sleeper plane at 10:55 o’clock
at night going west and on the return
trip board the sleeper direct in Los
Angeles, leaving it at Fort Worth
the next morning at 8:40 for the day
plane.
East and westbound stops are made
in Little Rock, Dallas, Fort Worth,
Abilene, Big Spring, El Paso, Doug
las Tucson and Phoenix.
On the new schedule it is possible
to spend the week-end in California,
eat dinner in Los Angeles Sunday
and be back in Memphis by noon
Monday with the loss of only half a
day’s work.
Dip In Ocean
I had dinner in Los Angeles one
night, breakfast in Fort Worth and
lunch in Memphis. And the thing
that gave me a still funnier feeling
was the fact that my swimming
trunks were still wet that night
from going in the Pacific the pre
ceding afternoon. I couldn’t believe
that I traveled 3,646 miles round
trip almost without stopping.
There is plenty of daylight flying
for those who are of a see-soinothing
of-the-scenery bent of mind, and
even at night I could see for miles.

The plane flies over most of Texas
at night outbound, but coming back
you can see much of it by day. From
Phoenix into California the plane
passes over mile after mile of desert
with mountains rising beneath you
like giant cinder piles.
At the desert’s edge and then all
the way in to Los Angeles you look
down on orchards and farms as far
as you can see, in a never ending var
iety of color.
Most impressive of all the sights
probably is that of Los Angeles at
night— just after the plane takes off
from the field at Glendale and circles
ever the city gaining altitude.
Quite A Few Lights
Stretched beneath you" is 125
square miles of light, every shade in
the rainbow—the largest city in the
world in area—Los Angeles, Holly
wood, Venice, Manhattan, Beverly
Hills, Culver City, Santa Monica,
Pasadena, all rolled into one—more
lights than 1 ever saw. And before
it's too dark to see you are over the
San Gabriel mountains and on the
way over the Mohave desert again.
The stewardesses, who must be
registered nurses but must not be
licensed pilots, have their hands full
pretty much of the time. Not that
any of the passengers are romantic
ally inclined, but it is the stewardess’
lot to make up the plane's 12 berths;
serve ford, or help the passenger to
select his next meal to be radioed
ahead to the next stop, and converse
I intelligently on the view, the gas con
I sumption, speed or the co-pilot’s
! home life.
The pilot and co-pilot lead a very
orderly and sane existence in com
parison with the slip of a girl who
1 must never exceed 115 pounds unless
1 sh« wants to become matron of an
I airport dining room. They are shel
I tered from the passengers by a door
| and carry on an almost continuous
j conversation over their two-way
radio-telephone with the ground
j stations.

I and where the smoothest, clearest air

Assisting in the flight are revolv
ing beacon lights every 10 to 15 miles
that turn on and off by means of a
photo-electric cell that turns them
on at sunset and off at sunrise. The
directional radio beam guides the
pilot at all times, giving out a steady
hum when he is flying directly down
its path, or chattering dashes or
dots the instant he varies his flight
to either side. ,
The dressing room is a model ot
efficiency, containing everything but
a tub and shower. Any man who can
-have successfully on a train could
shave blindfolded on a plane. There
is none of the sickening swerves
i around bends or sudden stops and
starts to imperil the jugular vein.
The berths are ingenious. The
| lower is made by shoving back the
two seats in each of the 12 sections

head much as on a Pullman. Exactly
I the reverse of the Pullman, however,
i the upper is easier to get in, as the
