GLANCING
BACK AT
BREVARD
Taken from the files of The
Sylvan Valley News, beginning
1895, through the courtesy of
Mrs. W. B. F. Wright.
(From the file of June 17, 1898)
A little (laughter of Gaston Neill,
aged seven years, fell from an apple
tree op Saturday and was quite ser
iously injured. It seems that she
alighted on her shoulder, and it waa
dislocated and her collar bone broken.
Dr. Young dressed the wounds, and
at last accounts the little one was
doing as well as could be expected.
This ought to be a warning to climb
ing after fruit.
Several new cottages are being
added this summer to the permanent
growth of our town. The one con
structed by Joe Chunn and Son for
Mr. DeVane is ready for occupancy.
Chas. L. Osborne is building in the
neighborhood of the Epworth school
purchase, as is also J. L. Aiken. Th9
T. J. Neely cottage near the depot is
to be finished at once and Squire
Henning will have his new cottage
veadv before the season for summer
boarders has passed. Taking all
thing; into consideration the growth
of i: vard is very encouraging.
A very unique funeral occurred at
the . luzener cemetery near Rocky
Hill on Friday last. The amputated
leg of Ed Glazener was the subject
and quite a number of interested
spectators were present. A very
nicelv finished box or coffin contain
ed the limb. This was opened in due
form at the grave and the ‘corpse
was viewed by all who felt so inclined.
Mrs. Albert Jenkins will visit her
daughter Daisy, now Mrs. Steele,
near Asheville today, to be absent
some weeks. Mr. Steele we are in
formed. has eharge of the summer
home of e^-Secretary Carlisle at
Swannanoa.
Mrs K. B. Stradley ot Asnevmt,
a sister ol Mrs. Z. W Nichols is
spending tin* summer in Brevard and
enjoyinv: our mountain air.
A new combination in the livery
buiness of Brevard seems destined to
secure its share at least of the
patronage of the traveling public. \V
refer to the firm of M. D. Coopei
Co., composed of M. D. Cooper, T.
Clarke and T. W. Whitmire As they
are all hustlers we predict for them
a liberal support from our people.
Mis- Vienna Nichols is home from
Asheville Normal for the vacation.
Her many friends in Brevard extend
a hearty welcome.
Mr- Doolittle and child, of Char
es'tmt S. (’.. who have spent several
summers in this vicinity, is stopping
at the pleasant home of J. J. »n«P
man this season.
The Iiverv firm of England & Co.
has dissolved. Mr. Asa England re
tiring. The business will continue
under the firm name of M. B.
Water- and Son.
Sapphire seems to be quite an at
traction. and since the opening ot
Fairfield Inn our liverymen are reap
ing quite a harvest in transierring
visitors from the railroad terminus
hevt I" the Tixaway company s
hotels. If the business at Sapphire
continues to grow it will not be
always until the company has some
other means of getting there than the
use of livery horses. It would not sur
,,ris ns to see an electric car line
established before another season. I he
company seems perfectly willing to
spend lir. m y to accomplish its ends.
M 1,. Shipman, edit r of the
Hustle-Clip-Keader, and drummer tor
hotels, livery stables et al. is attend
ing the convention of North Carolina
editor - at Wayncsvillc this week. We
hope he will learn whih there that
the other editors have some rights in
this world which he has not moral
right to infringe. ,, .
Mrs. Mariah Mackey, an old and
highly esteemed lady died at the home
of h V daughter. Mrs. E. B Clayton,
near Pentose, on Sunday last, aged
TO years. Mrs. Mackey was a sister
„f ('at>t I 0. Neill and the mother
of : large family, the youngest ot
whom are best known to Brevard
people - Houston who lives in Bre
S ami Mrs. E. B: Clayton of the
Enon section.
The following ticket for the com-,

Fuller; clerk. R. H. Zachary; regis
ter. R. R. I'eaver; treasurer T W.
Whitmire: commissioners, l.1 • t
ton iT W. Brooks and Wm. Maxwell.
Last week we noticed a swarm of
bees which had constructed a quan
tity of in w comb underneath their
hive, and filled it with the most de
licious sweets as a icsu t •
honev dew. Nature seems to have a
habit of saving all waste which man
would do well to imitate.

A NEW DIET
(By “Babe" Neely)
Mrs. Mitch Neely
Rowell and Alvin and some other
men,
Were all out camping near a rattle
snake den.
They ran out of food, but wanted to
stay
Out in the woods for another day.
So they killed a snake and fried it
brown,
And all ate that meat without ev’en
a frown.
i Rowell tanned the skin in a jar of
ooze,
Because he said, “I need a pair of
new shoes.”
When out camping with nothing to
eat,
Alvin said, “Get a piece of rattle
snake meat."
“Of course,” said Rowell, "It can’t
be beat.”
And Charles agreed, “It sure was a
treat.’
But as for me, I’ll take chicken or
ham,
Or even a piece of tender lamb.
Or fish or pork or even deer,
But no rattlesnake meat do I want
near.
Worship Sun Yat-Sen
China did not fully appreciate Dr.
Sun Yat-Sen. Its revolutionary leader,
before he died in 1925. But today his
photograph is not only hanging In mil
lions of homes, shops, schools and of
dees, but services of worship are held
every Monday before large copies of
.t in thousands of post olilces, army
amps and government bureaus. - -< 'o.
