\\ GLANCING Jl ; BACK AT ;! :: BREVARD ' ;! Taken from the flies of The ; | < i Sylvan Valley News, beginning < > ' ’ 1895, through the courtesy of ;; I Mrs. W. B. F. Wright. (From the file of July 15, 1898) A beautiful catalogue of the State Normal and Industrial college at Greensboro has found its way to our table. This institution seems to be in a thoroughly prosperous condi tion with 625 students receiving in struction during the past year. Among Brevard students we notice Misses Chester and Lizzie B. Bell. A little child of Silas McCrary of Cedar Mountain had its arm broken by a fall last Saturday. The new tele phone line demonstrated its useful ness on this occasion, as a mess-ge to Dr. King saved the little I uw some hours of suffering. Mrs. Reuben- Ballard, who has been quite seriously ill at her home near Rocky Hill, is re.) .'led much improved. Dr. M. M. King is in at tendance. Last week everybody was certain the crops would all be burned up and destroyed by drouth; this week they are equally certain that everything will be di owned out and destroyed. The fact is Transylvania county has never had a famine caused by a crop failure and these who borrow trouble on this account will have it to pay back without interest. A disposition j to find fault with the weather seems to be inherent in some people. Mrs. Knowles and Miss Gertrude Knowles of Atlanta, who lost their lives on the ill-fated French steam ship Bourgone, were the wife and daughter of a brother of W. H. Knowles of Tampa, Fla., who is stop ping with his family at Lynhurst, the beautiful h>Jmo ef Hon. Thos. S. Wood. It would seem impossible that any irony of fate could connect Bre vard, 400 miles from the sea and on top of a mountain, with this horrible disaster in any way. A prominent wedding occurred last Thursday, July 8, 1898, when Misss Nettie Loftis and Charles B. Heaver were united in marriage by Rev. J. L. Wicker. A. T. Cooper acted us best man and Miss Nina Beaver as maid of honor. The day wil1 long be remembered by many of our citi zens for various reasons, the main one heing that it rained and the waters of Nicholson creek spread over the bottom lands, forming a barrier which separated the waiting guests and impatient bride from the principal actor in the drama the groom. The time set fer the wedding was 8 p. m. but the creek became im passable and it was 9:30 before the presence of the groom relieved the anxiety of the bride and invited gue-ts. But “All’s well that ends well,” and the delayed ceremony was happily consumated in due time. Mr. Denver i- the storekeeper and gauger at Cooper’s Laurel Valley distillery. He is thif soil of W. M. Denver, Lsq., of Asheville, and he has made many friends during his sojourn among us. Miss Loftis has been reared among , ur peopde. and fov a year or mole has beep, an ornament to Brevard soeietv. Among the invited guests at the wedding the following were pres ent to take part in the enjoyment of the occasion: Major Wm. K. Bne?e and daughter Bessie; Robert; T. W. and Van Whitmire with their wives; Mrs. Dr. Horton, Mrs. W. 1’. Whit mire, Misses Mattie Floyd. Agnes ami Alice Wood, Rena Moore, llaisie McCarrell. Mamie Cooper. Judith and Aileen Whitmire: Messrs. John and Nat McMinn. Asa England, T 1, Walters. C.ra Morris, J. E. Vler ,<41. Jas. Trantham, John Walters, Ome Y'.ung. Walter Wind anc Clyde Duckworth.
