SCHOOLS OF STATE
ARE ON PROBATION
CHARLOTTE, Dec. 19—The ywu
1985, three( hundredth anniVerqer)
of the founding of the first second'
ary school in America, is likely tc
find only seven public high school!
In North Carolina on the accredited
list of the Southern Association of
Secondary Schools.
Next year will be observed in the
United States as the tercentenary of
the founding of Boston. Latin school
in Massachusetts in 1635, and that
of the 67 accredited high schools in
this state, 60 of them fall short oi the
southern associations requirements
and have been put on probation for
one year only. Therefore the nation
wide celebration is likely to find
N earth Carolina high schools in
worse condition than those of any
other state in the south with fewer
on the accredited list.
The main handicap to recognition
cf the Tar Heel schools as standard
is the matter of length of term. The
association requirement is 175 days,
but only seve nhigh schools in the
state have a nine months’ term —
Southern Pines, Roanoke Rapids,
Durham, North Wilkeiboro, and a
few others. The next requirement
lacking in all but the seven schools
is the $1,000 annual salary for teach
ers.
As a result of these conditions
students from tho standard eight
months high schools in the state
would not have to take ar. examina
•tiion to enter colleges in this state,
for the college requirements in North
Carolina were set up to meet existing
conditions. However if students want
to attend colleges in other states,
save a few in Virginia and South
Carolina, they will have to take en
trance examinations unless their
school appears on the accredited list
of the southern association.
