J • «’«. AilLA^' O-.e folk who are reading this Lytempt at well-wishing have wade che year 1934 one that has been 1 et y j.ood to The Transylvania Times. Your support ctf our paper has given as courage to try to give you the very best paper possible, in every respect, and if we have fallen short of the mark, it is not because we he-t not tried. f f\ I To our subscribers who have paw nearly two thousand dollars for the paper, we first say “thank you.” Without your interest in the Home Paper the advertisers would not have bought nearly so freely of the space we had to sell. To our friends who have aided us in gathering news, in reporting the thousand and one items that have gone to make the paper of interest to our readers, we are deeply in Sidebtcded. Your help has been very, very gratifying indeed. To those who send in their weekly letters from the various communities we owe double gratitude, and to the loyal force which has labored so'’faithfully during the long days and weeks, with' ut grumbling or growling, we could wiih for none bettei. And our business people who have bought space from week to week, the real backbone of the paper, we make our bow. No less important has been the patronage of our job department, the home folk supporting this de partment of the paper exceptionally well. And so, to everybody, everywhere, Tli ' Transylvania Times wishes the very merriest of Christmastides, and the most prosperous of all years in 1935. SANTA CLAUS HAS REES’ GOOD TO PEOPLE OF TRANSYLVANIA COUNTY \\\. folk wno are privileged to live in Transylvania, should really cele brate this Christmas, because Santa Claus has been good to us. First is our College—a great in stitution that has exceeded our great* i i. expectations in every way— actually in operation, and already : h wing what a great asset it is going to be to our people. Next, the parkway— running by i ur very doors, this great scenic lord i. dtstined to bring us thousands of people annually, and with many fine people will naturally come bet ter business and better conditions in every way. , i Work starting on the Boylston road —people in the lower end of the county will not be alone in the bene fit to be derived from this new route. Work, employment—^fSyrolls have been coming alonpr steadily through the year, giving our folk chance to hold up th/ir heads and feel that they are really a part of the great scheme of things. Good crops—no drouths, no sever© storms, no floods. The farmer has been very bountifully rewarded for his labors in returns on his work. And while the price has not been the best in years, yet it has been far better than in sortie of the recent seasons. There is a Sometftlng—we like to think of Santa Claus at this season of the year—a Great Something that has been very, very good to Transyl vaniu County in 1934, and we should all be proud that we live here, and are privileged to look up above the most beautiful hills and give thanks to Him who has been so good to us. We miss our Brevard College news from this issue of the paper, and too we miss seeing Welle Sturkey and i Jazzy Moore, ourpollege editors, who have gone to their4homes for their Christmas holidays. GOLDEN TEXT—Whosoever bellev eth that Jesus Is the Christ le born of God: and every one that lovetb him that begat loveth him also that Is be gotten of him.—1 John 5:1. PRIMARY TOPIC—How to Shpw We Love God. JUNIOR TOPIC—Sons and Daugh ters of God. INTERMEDIATE AND SENIOR TOP IC—How Christ Helps Us to Live Our Best. YOUNG PEOPLE AND ADULT TOP IC—Victory Through Christ. The purpose of John In this epistle Is to furnish criteria by which one may know beyond a peradventure that he Ims eternal life (see I John 5:13). In working out his purpose he sets down a definite thesis In chapter 1, verses 1-4, wnlch Is that eternal life was man ifested to credible witnesses—John aud his fellow apostles—In the perron of Jesus Christ Through the Incarnation Jesti3 Christ has become Identified with the human race, so that those who be lieve !n him are Introduced to the Fa ther, resulting In u vital fellowship. The saved one has fellowship with Cod, or fellowship In the life eternal. The entire epistle Is devoted to the exhibi tion of tests by which one can surely know that he Is saved. The lesson unit for todny Is the. culmination of these tests. I. Believes That Jesus la ths Christ (v. 1). ■ W.y. Such faith is the proof of regener ation. He not merely believes in the ethics of Jesus, but chat the grams’ .fest.s is the Messiah of God—the Son of God come In the flesh. The one lacking this belief ia still unregenerate, regardless of his pretensions. Jesus Christ is the giver of eternal life. Tea, he Is. In his very essential being, etor nnt lll'e. Therefore, the one who be lieves In him as manifest In the flesh Is born of God. II. Loves the Children of God (v. 1). The one born of God loves those who I are born of God. The unfailing test of fellowship with God Is that we love (hose who are born of God. Love for God shows itself n loving God's chil dren. III. Keeps God's Commandments (w. 2. It). This is filial, not legal obedience. We do not keep God's commandments In order to become Ids children, Ipit be ; cause we possess his nature. Obedi ence is the unfailing proof of the di vine birth. IV. Overcomes the world (vv. 4, 5). Conflict for the regenerate man Is absolutely certain. Tiie world's ways are opposed to God. I!y the world Is meant all that Is opposed to God. It includes all the lusts of the flesh which respond to the enticements of the world. It also includes Satan, the prince of this world. The one who be lieves that Jesus is the son of God is horn of God and has Jesus Christ IIv-1 ing in-film. Therefore, he overcomes j the world, because he has In him one who is greater than Satan. Faith in .lesus Christ Is the weapon by means of which victory is realized. The vic torious life is the absolute test of be ing a Christian. V. The Grounds of Christian Belief (vv. 0-12). Since victory over the world is se cured by faith In Jesus ns the Son of God, it is important that we know the | grounds upon which such belief Is based. The believer's faith rests upon the threefold testimony of the Spirit, \ the water, and the blood. 1. The Spirit is the Holy Spirit, the thin) member of the Godhead. Ills supreme business is to make Christ rent. This he does to the spirit of the believer (Korn. 8:1(1), and to the world, through the Word of God and through the lives and testimony of believers. 2. The water is his baptism at the Jordan. Ity baptism he formally en tered upon his mediatorial work. It whs here that the Spirit came upon him In the form of a dove, aud that the Father acknowledged him as his Son. 3. The blood Is that of the Cross. In the act of baptism lie dedicated him self to that task of making full a right eousness for uian on the cross of Cal vary. This Is doubtless what Is meant by "fuimtlng all righteousness." His baptism and the crucifixion, with all that they slgultted, were proofs that Jesus was the very Son of God. The witness of the cross of Christ Is still gripping and saving men. Children a* Teacher* The child In the cradle Is God's child. Mow, then, shall we take this little child? We will take him as one who brings a new revelation to us. The children are the great teachers. They bring a new revelation of God and his love. r Call for Prayer Emergencies call for Intense prayer. When the man becomes the prayer, nothing can resist Its touch. Elijah on Carmel, bowed down on the ground, with his face between his knees, that was the prayer—the man himself. tifa What kind of a tale Is life to yon? 1 Ufe meaningful and worth living?
