Bosnian R.F.D. carrier, reports he has one of the lost carrier pigeons at his home with his other pig eons. The bird has a band on each leg but so far he has not caught the bird to get the numbers. SINGING CONVENTION IS WELL ATTENDED SUNDAY The upper district singing convention met at Middle Fork church Sunday af ternoon. with the Rev. W. H. Nichol s'm. 'president, presiding. The next convention will meet at Mt. Morriah Calvert, the third Sunday in July. Arrangements are being made to have a quartet from Greenville, S. C., present, as well as other good singers. Mrs. Huff is well known in Transyl vania county, having taught home economics in Rosman high school for a number of years. arrested for DRUNKEN DRIVING Chief of Police H. H. Bowie arrested last week in Rosman, Ed Cantrell and John Green for being drunk, and Ralph Snelson, for driving while drunk, all of Brevard. Cantrell and Green were tried and paid fine, while Snelson was bound over to court. Snelson and Green are employed by the highway department. Want Ads Are Popular Greeks Return Large Sum Sent From U. S NEW ORLEANS.—A quarter million dollars of the fund sent to Greece by a Greek war relief society in America was returned with thanks because Nazi Germany was then in possession of Greece. Archbishop Athenagoras of the Greek Orthodox church of America, said here. “The society collected $6,000,000 and sent $4,000,000 to Greece.” said the archbishop who headed the drive. “But the last $250,000 came back. We have now more than $2,000,000 and the drive is continuing.” He said this money would be used to bring Greek orphans to the United States to be educated, with permission of the United States government; to aid Greek refugees in Egypt and else where and send to Greece clothing for children under Red Cross care. Hospital Patients To Do Own Sewing PUEBLO, Colo. — The women at Colorado state hospital make their own dresses and bed linens—and therein lie statistics. After hospital officials figured the amount of material needed for one year they ordered 2,338 bolts. If placed end to end the cloth would reach 64 miles— half way from Pueblo to Denver. If the women were to sew they need ed thread, so 8,400 spools and 330 large cones were ordered. Put the spool thread end to end. it’ll go from Pueblo to Kan sas City. Each cone contains 0,600 yards, mak ing a total of enough to reach across the country from New York to San Francisco two and one-half times. 29 Zamzam Survivors Set Sail For New York LISBON.—Twenty-nine women an i children of missionary families who sur vived the sinking of the Egyptian steamer Zamzam were among 632 pas sengers who sailed for New York last Thursday. This left 56 Zamzam survivors here, all of whom the United States consulate hoped to get aboard a liner due to sail Saturday. Originally 119 Zamzam sur vivors came here from France June 2. The others already have left, four of them by Atlantic Clipper plane. North Carolina ranked eighth in the Nation in acreage of commercial truck crops for market in 1940, reports the State Department of Agriculture.
