DAIRYMEN ARE TO INCREASESUPPLY The greatest need for increased pro duction under the nation’s gigantic food -for-defense program in 1942 lies in the field of dairying, says John A. Arey, ex tension dairyman of N. C. State College. Yet existing facilities for production in relation to probable needs indicate that dairy farmers of the country face a different task in meeting the national 1942 production goal of 125,000,000,000 pounds, an increase of 7 per cent over the 117,000,000,000 pounds expected to be produced in 1941. However, North Carolina farmers will find the demand not too difficult to meet, since they have been asked to increase production by only 4 per cent. This year it is estimated that Tar Heel cows will give 1.462.000,000 pounds of milk. Next year their goal has been set at 1,520, 000,000. At the same time, North Carolinians have been asked to add 10.000 milch cows to their herds by next year. Cow population this year is estimated at 380.000. Next year, the Government has asked that it be jumped to 390.000. The State College specialist pointed out that better feeding and manage ment should bring North Carolina up to its 1942 goal with no trouble. He ex pressed confidence that cow owners of this State would heed the Government’s request and try to do their part in this national defense effort. Much of the expected increase will be used at home to improve the health of American citizens, while additional large amounts will be shipped overseas to the British through the Lease-Lend Act. CO-ED SECOND IN STATE TO GET MOVIE, “SERGEANT YORK" SERGEANT YORK Hero of 1918 Break* 23-Year Silence For New War Movie Alvin C. York is a simple Tennessee farmer, whose incredible, single-handed capture of 132 German soldiers in 1918 blazed in headlines across the world. "What you did," said Marshal Foch, as he bestowed on him the Medaille Mili taire, "is the greatest deed accomplished by any Allied soldier.” When Sergeant York (promoted for his heroism) came back home, he was America’s idol. Honors, parades, ban quets engulfed him; movie, theater and business contracts totalling $250,000 were tossed in his lap, but York refused all offers, including that of Jesse Lasky to star him in his own film biography. “I wouldn’t trade on the American uni form,” he said. So Sergeant York went back to his native valley—the Valley of the Three Forks of the Wolf—to farm his land once more. Again Lasky approached him, unsuccessfully, in the late ’20s. But when the present war started the U. S. on a national defense program, the pro ducer was able to convince York the film would be a patriotic service. So, after 23 years of waiting, Jesse Lasky now presents, with Warner Bros., the true story of Sergeant York. This new movie about war will open at the Co-Ed on Sunday, November 2, for a three-day run. The screen play is based on York’s diary, as edited by a collaborator, on the Congressional Record, and on anecdotes collected in his native village from the hero’s neighbors. (Lasky made four trips there, with scenarists and steno grapher.) There are 26 real-life char acters portrayed in the film, including York's overseas buddies and the noted men he met after his return. Most of them are still living; and the studio sent a man on a 10,000-mile journey to get the necessary signed releases. Sergeant York okayed the carefully authenticated script. He paid a three week visit to Hollywood, looked over the sets, and made the cordial acquaintance of Gary Cooper. And with the mor^ey he received, the Alvin York Foundation has built a community gymnasium for Alvin York’s friends and neighbors. wqmljo'ik Co-Ed Theatre SUNDAY - MONDAY - TUESDAY November 2, 3 and 4th i NEW washer bros. triumph,-WALTER BRENNAN • JOAN LESLIE GEORGE TOBIAS • STANLEY RIDGES • A HOWARD HAWKS PRODUCTION Mgfcui >!»■ Mm ky Moai Ratal t Nofry mu Ml ltd Howard Hack t MM Halloa • Dtaad Upon Ik* Diary oi Sorpoant Yaft Pvodacod by JCSSI L LASKY and ML V.
