Loftis having re signed on account of failing health. Here is a good opening for some young man of steady habits, to grow up with the town and have a permanent job at good wages. The fact that we have elec tric lights does not relieve the ne cessity for a night watchman. Farmers who stand aloof and do nothing to encourage the Estes Company in their efforts to build up a shipping point for vegeta bles at Brevard, are working against their own interests. Mr. Doyle has received orders to rent 10 acres of land to plant in Irish potatoes, and if he succeeds in getting a suitable location he will give our farmers several pointers on crop raising. We bespeak for him the hearty cooperation of all. The News is evidently growing in popularity in this congressional district. Ten years ago we tried to get an exchange with every newspaper published in the dis trict, but did not succeed in Ru therford county. Last week we received our first copy of the Rutherford Sun with a request to “exchange.” Certainly, it gives us pleasure to comply. We hard ly know how we have managed to “keep house” so long without the Sun. The committee "on church build ing, consisting of Messrs. W. H. Duckworth, W. P. Whitmire, Thos. H. Shipman, J. H. McLean, W. K. Osborne, W. B. Duckworth, W. H. Faulkner, C. L. Osborne and W. H. Grogan, will make their re port to the church next Sunday morning. It is very important for every member of the church to be present as far as possible when this report is presented, the pas PATTERSON'S HAS THE Style-Right Apparel For Both MEN and WOM • HmtiiaiiiisiHiiiiiHimiMiiiiMmiiisiiiHMimieiiiiiiiiiimii LADIES9 Coats Suits Dresses Authentic styles at value giving prices. About 10 o’clock last Tuesday night a fire alarm brought out the department and a large number of citizens who had not yet retir ed. A dense volume of smoke in the Aethelwold hotel was the cause of the alarm, and investi gation showed that it came from the laundry room. The K. of P. lodge had been in session and its members were still on the streets and responded to the call and helped to man the fire wagon. The blaze was soon extinguished with only slight damage. In search ing for the cause, Chief W. E. Breese discovered where a wood en bucket had burned to the floor leaving its hoops and a pile of ashes as witnesses. Walter Weilt is entitled to credit for discover ing the fire an^ giving the alarm. He had walked down toward the Franklin hotel with Will Grogan and the electric lights were cut off before his return. With the town dark he noticed a peculiar light in one of the rooms of the Aethelwold and notified Marshal Galloway. The Brevard laundry is once more ready for business under new management, with an up town office at the new furniture store where the old laundry was located. J. W. Chapman is its manager and will furnish steam power from the electric plant. Preparations are making for the erection of a portico over the sidewalk across the Main street front of the Aethelwold hotel. Charlie Kilpatrick, of Henderson county, is cutting stone bases for the supporting pillars. The mansard roof of Joe Clay ton’s Central hotel building is be ing rushed to completion as rap idly as workmen can do it and the weather will permit. This will add another 3-story building to Main street business houses. Prof. Fitch Taylor will deliver a Sunday school lecture at Con nestee church next Sunday. Song service will be conducted by Wes ley McCall, H. A. Oit, G. E. Mc Gaha and others.
