Pvt. C. E. Henderson Is
Lauded As Army Photo
grapher. Now In Utah
A picture and story of Pvt.
Charles Lyle Henderson, son of
C. W. Henderson, of Lake Tox
away, are featured in a recent
edition of the “Bomb-Bay Mes
senger,” published at the army
air base at Salt Lake City, Utah.
Prior to entering the service,
Pvt. Henderson operated the
Preston Studio in Asheville and
Mrs. Charles Miller is now runn
ing the business while he is away
in the army.
Pvt. Henderson, an army photo
grapher, is described by the base
newspaper as “one of Dixie’s best
known portrait photographers.”
He works in the photographic
section at the army station.
In 1940, he entered, upon invi
tation, four black and white por
traits for exhibition in the South
Galleries of the Royal Photogra
phic Society of Great Britain in
London. They included portraits
of a child, a Confederate soldier
and two girls.
“Jim Lee,” an Asheville laun
dry man, was the subject of a work
which won acclaim at the first an
nual exhibition of the Internation
al Salon of Photography at Vic
toria, Canada, in 1941. The Por
trait, “Old Confederate,” has been
added to the collection of the
Museum of Fine Arts at Hous
ton, Texas. It was chosen at the
14th annual exhibit sponsored by
the museum.
One of his portraits, “Photo of

OVERCROWDING OF
CHICKS CAUSE OF
POULTRY LOSSES
Timely Advice Is Given To
Poultry Raisers By R. S.
Dearstyne
One of the major errors in
brooding is the tendency of poul
trymen to overcrowd their chicks,
says R. S. Dearstyne, head of the
Poultry Science Department at N.
C. State College. He also calls at
tention to the fact that this over-'
crowding is further emphasized
as the chicks grow in size because
they naturally require more floor
space, feeding space and water
containers.
Along with a warning against
the overcrowding of chicks, he
urged that the sexes be separated
as early as possible, since this
is a well recognized practice of
all good poultrymen. The separa
tion of the sexes not only pro
vides the needed extra floor space
but it also allows for a better and
more uniform development of the
pullets.
According to Dearstyne, the
separation of the sexes can be
made at about five to six weeks
with the Mediterranean breeds.
With the American breeds, the
chicks are generally eight to ten
weeks old before the sex can be
accurately determined.
In getting the chicks out on the
ground, he suggests that they be
allowed to follow their own incli
nation and not be forced out of
doors. Where an entire confine
ment system is not practiced and
where a clean range with a grazing
crop is available, it is well to al
low chicks outside of the house
any time after they are a week
old, weather permitting.

ribbon award at the state conven
