Local Man Proposes That A Broom Industry Be Started In County Proposes That The Farmers Raise Broom Corn He’ll Make Brooms. W. J. Morgan, of North Bre vard, this week proposed that a broom industry be started here in Brevard and Transylvania coun ty, and offered his assistance in getting it established. Broom corn, Mr. Morgan states, can be raised in the county in large quantities. “Our soil and climate are ideal,” he stated and explained, “I know because I have already tried it.” He also explained that he is familiar with the manufacture of the broom com brush into brooms and promised that if a sufficient number of farmers would raise the corn this year he would bring a machine here next fall and make the brush into brooms. “In the beginning I would be glad to do that on a share basis,” he declared. Mr. Morgan said he had dis cussed the proposal with County Agent Julian Glazener and that Mr. Glazener thinks the suggestion is worthwhile. *. “There is no reason why we couldn’t have a little broom in dustry here,” Mr. Morgan assert ed. “I know from experience that one of our brooms will outlast the manufactured kind.” At the present time, he said, the com brush is grown largely in the states of Kansas, Oklaho ma and Texas. “Good brooms sell for 75 cents and there is some money to be made in that busi ness,” he declared. # He also suggested that far « ' v ima Beauty For The 1 Days Ahead , . . ] i Can be yours with the aid i i of our efficient operators. Monday morn ing, April 26th, for Mrs. Annie Sophia Moore. 79, a native of Bre vard, who died in Spartanburg the preceding day. following a long illness. Burial was in the Oakwood cemetery'. After moving from Brevard, Mrs. Moore became a resident of Jackson county, and had been living in Spartanburg for 21 years. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Beulah Keener, of Glenville, Miss Helen Moore, of Spartanburg, three sons, Gus N. Moore, Jess Moore, of Spartanburg, and Lawson Moore, of Penrose. Phone 2 Methodist Churches To Observe Golden Cross Sunday, 9th Sunday, May 9th, has been de signated as Golden Cross Sunday in Brevard and in the Western North Carolina Conference of the Methodist Church by Bishop Clare Purcell and the district superin tendents. In all churches of the conference attention will be call ed to the work being done at the Hugh Chatham Memorial hospital at Elkin. An offering will be taken for the charity work of this insti tution. The Golden Cross fund is used in charity work and is administer ed by the Reverend W. M. Smith, conference director o f Golden Cross. The offering last year for this cause was $11,098.00. This fund makes it possible for the hospital at Elkin to care for many charity patients. The Hugh Chat ham Memorial hospital has the unique distinction of never turn ing away a single person on ac count of inability to pay. Oak Grove Services Becoming Popular By Melba Siniard Wednesday night prayer meet ing services started this week at Oak Grove, North Brevard, Meth odist church, and will continue on Wednesday nights of each week. Different chapters in the Bible will be discussed at each service, in charge of the pastor, Gilreath Adams. An Epworth League has been organized and will meet each Sun day evening at the church. The young people’s division of the League will meet at 7 o’clock this Sunday evening, and the adult division at 8 o’clock. The Sunday night services, conducted by Mr. Adams, have been well attended the past several weeks. At last Sunday night’s church service, plans were made for sum mer religious training courses to be held at the churches on the Ecusta circuit for 10 weeks this summer, beginning May 22nd. The courses will be conducted by Rev. Lee Rutman, a Duke University ministerial student. Broughton Canup. of the U. S. navy, visited his brother, Mr. .T. B. Canup, and family the past week. He was accompanied by his sister. Miss Bessie Canup, who has been away from home for several months. Mr. and Mrs. James Dickson. Jr., have announced the birth of a son, James Franklin Dickson, born on April 11.
