Town And Farm In Wartime
Gas For Victory Gardeners
Victory gardeners planning to
cultivate plots away from their
homes will be eligible for extra
rations of gasoline this summer,
if they can show need for extra
mileage, the OPA has announced.
Mileage rationing regulations are
amended to provide up to 300
miles for six months for victory
garden travel, if the car owner: 1.
Is regularly cultivating a tract of
vegetable of 1„500 square feet or
more. 2. Cannot get to his garden
any other way and shows .his labor
is necessary to it. 3. Arranges, if
possible, to share his car with
other gardeners.
War Expenditures—1918 and 1943
In 1918 American war expendi
tures were only 18^ billion dol
lars—in 1943 they will exceed 100
billion dollars. These figures show
sharply the difference in cost be
tween the last war and this one.
There were four liberty and one
victory loan drives in the last war,
with a total goal ok less than 19
billion dollars, but t6 finance the
present war the people of the
United States must raise about 70
billion dollars before the end of
this year. In that war, our task

Casualty Totals
Announced casualties of the
United States armed forces from
the out break of the war to date
(whose next of kin have been no
tified) total 78,235. This total, ar
rived at by combining war and
navy reports, includes—dead 12,
123, wounded 15,049, missing 40,
435 and prisoners of war, 10,628.
“Lay Away” Of Shoes
Shoe dealers cannot hold or lay
away for customers beyond the end
of the period in which a current
war ration shoe stamp is valid
unless they receive the shoe ration
stamps in advance, the OPA has
announced. Another amendment
provides that house slippers and
moccasins designed for indoor use
only are not rationed.
Group Riding Increases
Group riding has made its great
est gains in rural industrial areas,
state surveys show. In these sec
tions, the average number of per
sons per car increased from 1.77
a year ago to 3.17 now. The aver
age number of persons per car
throughout the country has in
creased from 2 prior to July 1,
1942 to 2.66.

as the Delta Pi.
The Phi Theta Kappa is a na
tional scholastic honor society and
was organized in 1910 to culti

Timely Hints For
Farm Homemakers
By Ruth Current
Play is a necessary part of the
development and education of
every child. For wholesome con
structive play children need toys;
they need a place to play; they
need playmates; and they need
sympathetic adults. In time of
war, it takes thought and careful
planning by parents to see that
the children’s needs are met as
well as conditions will allow.
Good toys are toys with which
the child can do things; playthings
that are just looked at are of little
value. Many of the best toys are
used by children of widely differ
ing ages. Blocks and sand and
painting materials, for example,
are used in a simple way by the
toddler but their use continues all
through childhood. It is good for
a family to have some of these
toys that interest children of dif
ferent ages. They help to keep
the family together. They interest
the children of the neighborhood
and pave the way for companion
ship among children of different
ages as well as those of the same
age—companionships which mean
much in the development of chil
dren.
The French are said to add a
pinch of salt to their coffee. Such
a pinch should be added just be
fore the coffee is served, and does
add the last flavor touch to cof
fee-making in the taste of many
people.
The scum which forms on cocoa
as it cools should not be discard
ed, since it contains bone building
material which is healthful. Just
beat the cocoa with an egg beater
lightly, and the scum will be
broken up so that cocoa can be
enjoyed with its full nutritional
content.

FSA Borrower Families Expected
To Increase Producton This Year
Estimated Increases Given.
Poultry, Pork And Dairy
Products Here.
Farm Security Administration
borrower families believe they can
top last year’s production of war
essential crops by further increas
es ranging from 20 to 72 per cent,
Ralph L. Smith, county supervisor
of the FSA in Transylvania, states.,
Results of a survey released by'
the Office of War Information,
and just received here by the
local Farm Security office, show
that the 463,941 family-size farm
ers who as FSA borrowers made
record-breaking increases in ma
jor war crops in 1942 expect to
turn out 20 per cent more milk
this year than last; 41 per cent
more beef; 38 per cent more dry
beans; 62 per cent more soybeans;
52 per cent more flax and 72 per
cent more peanuts.
With the aid of Farm Security
Administration loans and the as
sistance of FSA supervisors in
planning and producing war need
ed crops, these farmers increased
their 1942 output from 20 to 106
per cent over 1941, and accounted
for a substantial proportion of the
nation’s total increases in five
major crops. Constituting 7.6 per
cent of the country’s farmers, they
supplied 36' per cent of the total
increase in milk, 27 per cent of
the increase in dry beans, and 10
per cent of the increases in eggs,
chickens and peanuts.
In 1943 these farmers believe
they can produce enough addition
al milk to meet the requirements
of more than 3,000,000 active men
or a total of 1,183,850,00 gallons.
In 1942 they produced 989,990,000
gallons. They also expect to boost
their pork production from 762,
800.000 pounds in 1942 to 1,178,
000,000 in 1943, chickens from
140.150.000 to 224,350,000 pounds
and peanuts from 217,000,000 to
374,000.000 pounds.
These estimates represent the
farmer’s own belief in their abili
ty to increase production. Last
year their actual production came
fairly close to plans that were set
up early in the spring. They fell
short of planned production in
some major crops, but overshot
their mark in others. Whereas es-1
timated milk increases were set I
at 1.150,000,000 pounds, FSA bor-1
rowers actually produced an in
crease of 1,419,000,000 pounds, j
They also topped their peanut and
beef' production estimates but
were* unable to meet, in full, the
goals set for eggs, pork and soy
beans.
“While these are national fig
ures, small farmers in this section
can be expected to carry their part
of the production loan,” Mr. Smith
said. Farm plans indicate that the
principal increases by FSA bor
rowers here will be in poultry,
pork and dairy products, Smith
pointed out.
As shortening, cottonseed oil
can supply all cooking fats for an
army of 7,500,000, plus a navy of
1,500,000, plus 42,000,000 civilians.
