Yeoman Blanton Will Be At
Court House Rest Of
This Week
In an effort to save men and
women of Transylvania county and
vicinity much time and trouble in
making application for the Navy
or the WAVES, Recruiter Yeoman
Blanton, of the Asheville recruit
ing station will open a temporary
recruiting station in Brevard on
13, 14 and 15 of May and will re
main here for 3 days to interview
persons interested in any branch
of the Navy.
Recruiter Yeoman Blanton will
maintain his office in the court
house building, and his hours will
be froift 9 a. m. until 6 p. m.
All quotas have been lifted for
Navy enlistments, and an unlimit
ed number of 17 - year - olds,
WAVES and Seabees may be en
listed immediately. Also, men be
tween the ages of 28 and 50 may
qualify for enlistment with any
rating for which they are eligible.
Navy trade schools have been
opened wide to the 17-year-old
youngsters, in order that a large
group of young potential petty
officers will be available soon.
Never before in the history of the
Navy have opportunities for the
younger men been so great, and
a nation-wide drive has been in
augurated to obtain thousands of
youngsters for the training
schools.
There are 55 different Navy
trades from which the youngsters
may choose, and they range from
medical training to carpentry. An
effort is being made to place the
youngsters in the fields they pre
fer, on the theory that they will
do better work in the type of
trade they like best.
Hundreds of Tar Heel women
already have been enlisted in the
WAVES, and are now undergoing
training at some college or uni
versity. A few weeks hence, they
will be graduated, and will be eli
gible for petty officer ratings—
ready for duty at some shore sta
tion within the continental limits
of the United States.
Soldier’s socks are expected to
last 50 per cent longer as a result
of a new process of treating wool
now used by the Indian Army.

Good Suggestions Are Offered
To Poultry Raisers In County
Since there is a critical shortage
of animal and vegetable proteins
for pountry feeding, T. T. Brown,
extension poultry specialist at N.
C. State College, urges farmers
and poultrymen to take immediate
steps to prevent waste of feed and
to practice the highest degree of
efficiency in their poultry man
agement.
Growers should produce the
greatest amount of poultry and
eggs possible from the amount of
precious feed available. This calls
for better methods of handling the
poultry and Brown makes the fol
lowing suggestions for increasing
this efficiency.
Don’t overlook the chicks. Over
crowding not only causes many
deaths but also results in slow
growth and development. Thus,
chicks, feed and labor are wasted.
Use large enough feeders for
each state of growth of the chicks
and don’t overfill the feeders, as
such practice causes feed waste.
Keep the chicks as free of
worms and Coccidiosis as possible
through sanitary management,
summer shelters, green feed, and
worm treatment.
Although the Texas prison sys
tem produces all its own sugar,
rationing within the wall is the
same as on the outside.
