Gives History Awards 7th Grade Pupils In The County Announcement was made at the May meeting of the Waightstill Avery chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution of the names of the 7th grade history pupils in three schools of the county, to whom awards of $2.50 in war stamps had been made at commencement time. The meeting was held last Monday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Ed Matheson. These awards are made each year by the local chapter to the best 7th grade history student in the Brevard, Rosman and Pisgah Forest schools. Three awards were made in the Brevard schools to the three history classes. The following winners were an nounced: Brevard school, Billie Osteen, Doris Montgomery and William Byrd; Rosman school, Norma King; Pisgah Forest school, Frank Komowski. In the absence of the regent. Mrs. C. L. Newland, routine busi iness was conducted by the vice regent, Mrs. J. M. Allison. It was voted to dispense with the June meeting and to have only five meetings during the coming year, all of which will be in town, this change being made due to the tire and gasoline situation. A note was read expressing pride by the chapter members in the recent election of one of its members, Mrs. J. S. Silversteen, to the office of vice president gen eral of the National D.A.R. Following refreshments served by the hostess, the chapter ad journed for the summer months. MRS. LOOMIS HOSTESS AT CIRCLE MEETING Mrs. Burt Loomis was Hostess at the May meeting of Circle No. 1 of the Methodist church at her home last Thursday afternoon. Ten members were present. Routine business was conducted by the chairman, Mrs. E. S. Eng lish. and the devotionals were giv en by Mrs. Loomis. Refreshments were served by the hostess during the social period. “Coach” Blanton’s Engagement Announced The engagement of Miss Nancy Blanton, director of physical education and athletics at Brevard college, to Aviation Cadet Harold K. Stallcup, has been announced by Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Blanton, of Ellenboro, N. C. The marriage is expected to take place in early fall. YOUNG PEOPLE’S CIRCLE HAS MEETING AT THE CHURCH The Young People's circle of the Methodist church held the regular May meeting at the church last Thursday evening, with Miss Deane Roberson in charge of rou tine business in the absence of the president, Miss Mary Sluder. A program on “Child Labor in War Time,” was led by Mrs. John Pickelsimer. assisted by Carolyn Sluder, Mae Gallamore, Betty Lof tis and Mrs. John Reese Sledge. Refreshments were served by Betty Loftis in the absence of her sister, Mrs. Nathan McMinn, who was unable to attend. Young People Enjoy Picnic And Hike Sun. The Presbyterian and Episcopal young people, accompanied by Rev. and Mrs. Ashbv Johnson, en- i joyed a hike last Sunday after- i noon to Deerwoode camp. Games and a picnic supper were features of enjoyment on arrival at the camp. Mr. Johnson gave an interesting program talk, basing his topic on the 19th Psalm. At the meeting next Sunday j evening at the Hut. Baird, of Brevard, has announced the marriage of her daughter, Miss Virginia Mead Baird, to Lieutenant William D. Coldiron, of Wilmington. The ceremony was performed at the chapel at Camp Wheeler, Macon, Ga., where Lieutenant Coldiron is now stationed. A program of music was ren dered. Lieutenant and Mrs. Har rington were the only attendants. Officer friends and wives en tertained the couple at dinner at the officers’ club in Macon. The bride wore a coat suit of blue with honey beige accessories. Her corsage was of brown orchids. The couple will make their home in Macon. Mrs. Coldiron has spent many summers in Bre vard with her mother. PRESBYTERIAN CIRCLES HAVE MAY MEETINGS IN HOMES OF MEMBERS Circle No. 1 of the Presbyterian church met at the home of Mrs. H. Rathje last Thursday after noon for the regular May meeting. Mrs. A. H. Montville, chairman, presided over the routine business, and Miss Louise Brown conducted the Bible lesson. The program was in charge of Mrs. Clarence Allison. Nine members were present and one visitor, Mrs. C. F. Misenheimer, Jr. The meeting of Circle No. 2 was held at the home of Mrs. J. F. Aycock, with the chairman, Mrs. Walter Hart, presiding. Mrs. Frank Patton was in charge of the pro gram on “Our Birthday Offering for Brazil.” Devotionals were led by Mrs. Keith Pooser. Circle No. 3 met at the home of Mrs. Jerry Jerome, who presided over routine business as chairman. Mrs. Charles Davis was devotional leader, and the program was in charge of Mrs. Henrietta Sprouse. The night circle No. 4 met at the home of Mrs. M. M. Feaster. Mrs. Charles Russell, chairman, presided, and Miss Louise Brown conducted the devotionals. Each hostess served refreshments during the social period. HOSPITAL AUXILIARY TO MEET ON FRIDAY Regular meeting of the Women’s Hospital Auxiliary will be held to morrow afternoon at 2:30 o’clock in the Methodist church parlor. CHILD WELFARE PROGRAM AT SARAH TAYLOR MEET A program of child welfare was the main feature of the May meet ing of the Sarah Taylor Guild of the Methodist church, which was held last Thursday evening at the home of Mrs. Nat Townsend, who was assisted as co-hostess by Mrs. Glenn Lookabill. Following the program given by Miss Dulcie Hayes, routine busi ness was conducted by the presi dent, Mrs. Ralph Fisher. It was announced that the final payment had been made on the electric refrigerator which the organiza tion purchased for the parsonage. Refreshments and a social hour concluded the meeting. GIRL SCOUTS TO MEET AT CHURCH FRIDAY AFTERNOON Members of Girl Scout Troop 1 will meet at the Hut of the Presby terian church Friday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, announcement has been made by the leader, Mrs. Ashe Macfie. Plans will be made for a Scout party and other mat ters of importance will be taken up. All members are urged to at tend. HOMEMAKERS CLASS TO MEET TUESDAY NIGHT The Homemakers class of the First Baptist church will have the May meeting next Tuesday night at 8 o’clock at the home of Mrs. L. E. Bagwell on Maple St. AUXILIARY AND GUILD MET WITH MRS. SMEDBERG THURS. The regular meeting of the Aux iliary and Guild of St. Philip’s Episcopal church was held at the home of Mrs. H. V. Smedberg last Thursday afternoon. Mrs. David Ward, president, conducted routine business and led the devotionals. Mrs. Frank Jenkins reviewed a chapter in the Lenten study book, “A Just and Lasting Peace.” Mrs. H. R. Bobst was named secretary to fill the unexpired term of Mrs. G. B. Lynch, who resigned from this of fice. At the meeting of the Guild, plans were made for a party and bazaar to be given this summer. Refreshments and a social half hour were enjoyed at conclusion of the meeting. A wife placed upon her hus band’s tombstone: “He had been married forty years and was pre pared to die.” N. C. Music Program Heard At Meeting Of The Wednesday Club An interesting program on North Carolina music was heard at the regular meeting of the Wednesday club, which was held on the afternoon of May 5 at the home of Mrs. J. M. Allison. Mrs. Allison, program leader, had secured the assistance of four local musicians, A. B. Carter and Miss Sadie North, violinists, Mrs. Melvin Gillespie, accompanist, and Mrs. H. R. Bobst and Mrs. Allison, soloists. The program consisted entirely of North Carolina music composed by Mr. Carter, who has 734 compositions to his credit. Mr. Carter told of his meeting with Chaminade in Paris and of her playing a composition he had dedi cated to her. The following program was ren dered: Mr. Carter and Miss North, “Rank and File March,” “Let’s Go Overture” and three Mexican sketches; Mrs. Bobst, solo, “You;” Mr. Carter and Miss North, “Nan cy Caprice,” and three sketches; Mrs. Allison, solo, “Saviour Comes;” Mr. Carter and Miss North, three waltzes, and two re quest numbers by Mr. Carter, “Tallyho,” “Mound City March,” and “Horn Pipe,” danced by Mr. Carter to the accompaniment of Mrs. Gillespie. Business transactions were in charge of the president, Mrs. R. W. Everett. It was announced by Mrs. Keith Pooser, Girl Scout council chairman, that plans are underway for a Scout encampment at Camp Illahee, which will cost each girl $10 and the remaining $8 to be raised by the club council. It was voted that each member give at least two evenings a month to Red Cross work. Following refreshments served by the hostess, the ciub adjourned until May 19, for the final meet ing of the club year to he held at the home of Mrs. Ashby John son. Miss Jeanette Austin and Miss Lillie Brown were guests, in addi tion to the guest artists. PHILATHEA CLASS HAS INTERESTING MEETING The Philathea class of the First Baptist church met in the church parlor Monday night for the reg ular May business and social meet ing. Mrs. Roy McCall was hostess and also presided over routine business as president. Mrs. Edwin Morgan was elected secretary-treasurer to fill the va cancy made by the resignation of Mrs. John Dickson, who has mov ed away from Brevard. Miss Marie Galloway was pro gram leader, assisted by Mrs. Clyde McCrary, Mrs. Edwin Mor gan, Mrs. Karl Bosse and Mrs. Curtis Kelley. Refreshments and a social per iod were enjoyed.
