COTTON BAGGING
MADE AVAILABLE
FOR POTATO CROP
County’s Farmers Urged To
Place Orders With The
USD A War Board
Additional supplies of heavy
cotton bagging for handling the
early commercial potato crop in
North Carolina have been made
available by the War Production
Board and Transylavania county
growers should place their orders
as quickly as possible to insure
an adequate supply, according to
T. J. Wilson, chairman of the
county USDA War board.
This cotton material, he said,
was made available for this pur
pose after urgent appeals from
potato growers and agricultural
officials in the face of greatly in
creased acreage this year.
“This material is heavy fabric
and has been found suitable for
handling potatoes,” Mr. Wilson
said. “Now that it is available, it
is up to the growers to place
their orders in time to assure de
livery in sufficient quantities to
take care of the crop this year.
The sooner the dealer knows your
needs, the sooner he will be able
to determine how many bags he
will need for the season.”
He asserted that agricultural of
ficials have been assured that
burlap bagging will not be avail
able this year in sufficient quan
tities to take care of the early
potato crop, and urged farmers
not to delay orders on the hope
of obtaining burlap bags.
He estimated the early com
mercial potato crop in North Car
olina at 56,000 acres, of which
approximately 200 acres are in
Transylvania county. It is ex
pected the yield from approxi
mately 54,191 acres will be sold
in bags.
Timely Hints For
Farm Homemakers
By Ruth Current
When you go shopping, don't
shop at the rush hours when all
other shoppers are crowding the
stores. Don’t take up the clerk’s
time “just looking.” Compare
prices by reading your newspapers
before you leave home.
Avoid shopping when you are
too tired to use good judgment
and don’t take home things you
plan to return. Shop around to
find out where your most consis
tent best buys are. Buy fruits and
vegetables by weight not by mea
sure, when possible. See that the
scales are accurate. Check your
purchase slip before leaving the
counter.
Plan your wardrobe in advance
and take advantage of special
sales. Plan your color combina
tions around basic coat, hat, and
shoe colors. Remember one com
plete good-looking outfit, in which
you always feel your best, is bet
ter than several of which you are
not certain. Buy becoming and
well made school clothes, and put
less money into clothes you
don’t wear often. Buy simple
“classic” styles; you won’t tire of
them. Avoid buying dresses with
trimming that will not wash or
clean well.
Keep all your clothes in service;
give them daily systematic care;
don’t lay aside dresses that need
a button, a belt, or a pressing and
forget them. Two pairs of shoes
last longer if they are worn al
ternately than if the first one pair
and then the other is worn con
stantly until it wears out. Try not
to get your shoes wet. Avoid
spending your money on such
fads as cheap pins, necklaces, and
scarfs, because a few well-chosen
accessories have more charactel
than many cheap ones. Keep a
smock to wear while you are cook
ing or doing housework.

Strategy Wins Battles:
WAR BONDS
Supply The Means!
Allied strategy in North Africa proved superior to that of the
Axis generals with the result that today the Nazis and their satellite
troops have been overwhelmed in that area. The significaftce of this
triumph is not lost on the Nazi fuehrer. He knows that an invasion of
Europe is inevitable and he knows he and his henchmen cannot sur
vive that invasion.
The means to achieve this victory, as well as others which this
country and its brave allies have accomplished, came in large part
from the sale of War Bonds . . . fighting dollars put into the war ef
fort by patriotic and aroused Americans. Let’s keep it up until ev
ery vestige of tyranny is removed from the earth.
There’s No Second Place In A War
It’s Win Or Lose
Herr Hitler knows this and he knows equally well
that it will mean the end of his evil regime. Since his
advent into politics in Germany ten years ago, he
has been an increasing menace to the peace and securi
ty of the world. With arrogance he repudiated Ger
many’s solemn covenants. A will to peace on the part
of other nations and peoples was interpreted by him to
be a form of cowardice and as they yielded more to
preserve peace the German war lord became more ov
erbearing. Appeasement failed and Hitler continued
his boasts, threats and encroachments until they reach
ed their inevitable climax in WAR.
Grim were those first years of war for Britain and
her allies and Hitler had some chances of winning un
til he wantonly attacked Russia and induced the Japs
to stage the sneak raid on Pearl Harbor. With these
developments vanished any reasonable hope for a Hit
ler triumph,
Today mighty allied armies are poised for at
tacks on Hitler’s fortress of Europe and within the con
quered countries the spirit of revolt is flaming. Once
the allied armies strike, it is certain there will be form
idable uprising of those held in subjection by the Ger
man army.
The outlook for an allied victory was never bright
er than it is today, but we should not delude ourselves
into thinking the war has been won. We are now fac
ing our mightiest task . . . the actual smashing of the
German military machine and the overthrow of the
Hitler tyranny.
We on the home front should not relax at this crit
ical moment. One way we can speed victory is to buy
War Bonds freely and regularly. To our boys on the
fighting fronts it is assurance that we are backing
them without reservation. Holders of War Bonds are
thus provided with a reserve to meet post-war financial
difficulties.
