Local Couple Wed In Pretty Church Ceremony At Baptist Church Miss Mary Alice Hardin, daugh ter of Dr. and Mrs. Carl Hardin, of Brevard, became the bride of Aviation Cadet Robert Lee May, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lee May, of Wilmington, in a ceremony at the Brevard First Baptist church Sunday afternoon, May 23, at 2 o’clock. The pastor. Rev. B. W. Thomason, officiated, in the presence of relatives and friends. Wedding Music Mrs. Melvin Gillespie, of Bre vard, played the wedding music. Before the ceremony she played “Traumerei,” and during the cer emony, “O, Perfect Love,” was played softly. The traditional wed ding marches were played as the processional and recessional. Miss Myrtle Mae Spain, of Nor lina, was maid of honor, and Wil liam Rush, of Holly Hill, S. C., was best man The bride, who was given in marriage by her father, wore a white waffle going-away suit, with hat and accessories in white. Her corsage was of white carnations. The maid of honor wore a navy blue faille suit with hat and acces sories in blue. Her corsage was of red roses. The bride’s mother wore a dress of navy blue crepe, with accessories in white. Reception Given Following the ceremony a re ception was given by the bride's parents at their home. Mrs. May is a graduate of Bre vard high school and Brevard col lege. For the past six months she has been in the FBI department in Washington, D. C. Aviation Ca det May is also a graduate of Bre vard high school and Brevard col lege. He is completing the army air corps training school at Al bany, Ga. Following a wedding trip, Mrs. Local Girl To Finish Va. Nursing School Miss Jennie Marie Meece, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Meece, of Brevard, will graduate today from the University of Virginia Hospital School of Nursing at com mencement exercises to be held at that time in Charlottesville. Rel atives and friends in Brevard are in receipt of invitations to attend the exercises. Miss Meece is a graduate of Bre vard high school and of a junior college at Long Beach, California. Upon graduation, she v/ill receive the R. N. degree. CHILDREN GIVE PROGRAM AT METHODIST MEETING Little children of the children’s department of the Methodist church presented the program at the May meeting of the Women’s Society of Christian Service, which was held last Thursday afternoon in the ladies’ parlor of the church. Mrs. J. F. Zachary, leader of the children’s group, supervised the program, assisted by Mrs. Nathan McMinn and Mrs. J. E. Loftis. A vocai solo was rendered by Mrs. D. J. Luther. The missionary topic pertaining to training for leadership in Latin American countries was discussed by Mrs. Oliver Orr. Mrs. E. J. Coltrane, president, was in charge of business trans actions, included in which were reports of circle chairmen and other committee chairmen and other routine business. The meetings of Circle No. 2 and 3 were held at the church preceding the general meeting. May will return to Washington, and her husband will return to the new training field to which he will be transferred for his navi gator training. ENGAGEMENT OF COLLEGE GIRL IS ANNOUNCED HERE Mrs. B. B. Olinger, of Fountain City, Tenn., has announced the engagement of her daughter, Miss Esther Olinger, to Pfc. George Truett Henderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Henderson, of Lake Toxaway. Miss Olinger is a student at Bre vard College. Private First Class Henderson is in the engineering training school at Ann Arbor, Mich. The wedding will take place in the early summer. Asheville Music Membership Drive A membership drive for the Asheville Civic Music association is underway this week, and the drive will come to a close Satur day night, it was announced yes terday by Mrs. H. F. Finck, Bre vard representative for the assoc iation. New members ioining the as sociation will receive a special guest card to attend the concert of Sigmund Romberg and his en semble, who will s.opear in the Asheville auditorium Wednesday night, June 2, at 8 o’clock. His ensemble will consist of singers, pianists and concert orchestra. Romberg is regarded as the great est living composer today of pop ular light operetta scores. Ad mission to the Civic Music con certs the coming season will be by membership card only. Memberships may be procured through any of the following com mittee members in Brevard: Mrs. H. F. Finck, Phone 180, Alvin Moore, Mrs. Ralph Ramsey and Mrs. Charles Newland. C. Mr. and Mrs. Parris L. Galla more, of Brevard, have announced the marriage of their daughter, Miss Mae Sue Gallamore, to Wal lace Fulton Chappell, son of Mrs. M. D. Chappell, of Pickens, S. C. The ceremony was performed at the parsonage of the Brevard Methodist church, Saturday, May 22. The pastor, Rev. W. A. Jenk ins, officiated. The bride was dressed in navy blue with white accessories. Her corsage was of white carnations. Mrs. Chappell is a graduate of Brevard high school in the class of 1937, and of Brevard College in the class of 1940. She is at pres ent employed in the Farm Security office in Brevard. Mr. Chappell attended Pickens high school. He is manager of the Red Diamond Service station in Brevard. The couple will make their home in Brevard. Shower Honors Bride-Elect Miss Myrtle Mae Spain enter tained at her apartment last Thursday afternoon with a lingerie shower, honoring Miss Mary Alice Hardin, bride-elect, who was mar ried last Sunday to Aviation Cadet Robert Lee May. Appropriate games were enjoy ed, and the opening of the lovely gift packages in the shower afford ed much pleasure. Luncheon was served. Those present were: Jean Har din, Frances Walker, Jean Thom ason, Jean Dixon, Dot Poole, Jo Doris Johnson, Betty Truitt, Patsy Howard, Mamie Addington, Pat Brinkley, Cathrine Edgeworth Marjorie Perry, Julia Owen, Fran ces Pace, Mary Ruth Davenport, Bobbie Melton, Mary Alice Tins ley. GARDEN CLUB HAS PROGRAM ON JUDGING OF FLOWERS A program of interest on the judging of flower arrangements and classes was heard at the regu lar meeting of the Garden club last Friday afternoon. The meet ing was held at the home of Mrs. E. J. Coltrane, with Miss Lucile Smith and Miss Dulcie Hayes as hostesses. Mrs. Coltrane, program leader, had a unique display of a flower show, which consisted of pictures of good and bad flower arrange ments, and printed below each ill ustration was a criticism of the arrangement. Mrs. Coltrane dis cussed the topic along with the showing of the pictures. Mrs. Julius Sader, president, read the club collect and presided over the business session. The pro grams for next year were dis tributed among the members. Mrs. S. R. Harrington was appointed on the conservation committee. Included in the flower awards were: Best arrangement, Mrs. Har rington, first, for iris; Mrs. J. C. Wike, second and third for roses and peonies. Best specimen: Mrs. Harrington, first, for poppy; Mrs. Oliver Orr, second, for pepper plant; Mrs. Harrington, third, for peonie. Twenty-four members were pre sent, one new member, Mrs. Ralph Fisher, and five guests, Miss Madge Rhyne, Miss Mabel Cherry, Mrs. Jones, Miss Mary Gwynn and Miss Cathrine Edgeworth. Following refreshments served by the joint hostesses, the club adjourned to meet in June at the home of Mrs. Coleman Galloway, with Mrs. Bradford Allen as co hostess, and Mrs. Happ program leader. WEDNESDAY CLUB HAS FINAL MEETING OF CURRENT YEAR Final meeting of the club year of the Brevard Wednesday club was held on the afternoon of May 26 at the home of Mrs. Ashby Johnson, with sixteen members present. Mrs. R. W. Everett, president, presided over the meeting, which was opened with the collect and American’s creed led by Mrs. Leh man Kapp. Mrs. Keith Pooser, chairman of the Girl Scout coun cil, told of the Girl Scout parade and the house-to-house canvass made for the Scout camping fund. The club voted to buy the troop a flag with staff and standard. A rising vote of thanks was extended Mrs. Everett, retiring president, for her excellence of service the past year. Mrs. R. T. Kimzey read the pro gram prepared by Mrs. Thomas Wylie on “War Changes in Ameri can Living.” She told of the good natured acceptance of the ration ing system on the part of Ameri TRY TIMES WANT ADS Fortnightly Club To Have Luncheon Meet The annual luncheon of the Fortnightly club will be held to day at 1 o’clock at the home of Mrs. M. G. Pangle. This will be the final meeting of the club year. A business session, concluding the year’s work, will be held fol lowing the luncheon. CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY WITH ENJOYABLE PARTY AT HOME OF PARENTS Patricia Jane Balcomb enter tained fourteen little friends at her home, 354 Broad street, last Friday afternoon from three to five-thirty, in observance of her thirteenth birthday. The color scheme used was tur quoise, maize and shell pink. A huge maypole of turquoise stream ers, draped from the chandelier, was used for the centerpiece of a large table, around which the chil dren gathered to cut the cake and sing, “Happy Birthday.” Games were played and prizes given. Some of the winners were Bryon Green, Mary Alice Hoili field, and Deanne Ruth Balcomb. Refreshments consisted of birth day cake, a variety of crackers, kisses and fruit punch. Mrs. Bal comb was assisted in serving and entertaining by Mrs. D. T. Aber crombie and Deanne Ruth Bal comb. Those attending were: Mary Jane Newland, Ann Duckworth, Charles Osborne, Bill Brittain, Jean Pip kin, Clara Jean Parrish, Richard Bryant, Bryon Green, Mary Alice Hollifield, Jane Merrill, Jack Zach ary, Bobby Loftis, Deanne Ruth and Patricia Jane Balcomb. Jane Merrill was an out-of-town visi tor, a sister of Fritz Merrill, of Brevard. DAUGHTER IS BORN TO FORMER BREVARD GIRL Dr. and Mrs. Preston Taylor, of Belmont, have announced the birth of a daughter, Bertha Gay, born on May 19 at a Charlotte • hospital. Mrs. Taylor was formerly I Miss Mildred Trantham, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. W. Trantham, ! of Brevard.
